Marcus Davis Drops to Lightweight Against Jeremy Stephens at UFC 125

Marcus DavisMarcus Davis is dropping from welterweight to lightweight and is expected to meet Jeremy Stephens in his 155-pound debut at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day in Las Vegas, MMAjunkie reports.

Davis (17-7) was submitted by Nate Diaz in the “Fight of the Night” at August’s UFC 118 for his third loss in four fights, while Stephens (18-6) had his two-fight win streak stopped by Melvin Guillard at September’s UFC 119.

The UFC 125 fight card is headlined by a rematch between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard and also features featherweight champ Jose Aldo vs. Josh Grispi.

bad move… I dont think Marcus can do this cut and be great at lw…

      Agreed.
I think the UFC can either have Marcus Davis at 100%, or Marcus Davis make 155, but not both…

Davis is a good fighter, but he hasn’t looked that great lately. I think he’s a bit small for ww and too big for lw.
Not the best move for him but probably the only option at this point hua?

      • Given his age and probable natural walk around weight I have to reluctantly agree. When Davis first hit the scene I immediately liked him and have looked forward to his fights. His heart and willingness to press the action have earned my respect and I hope he’s not making too huge of a mistake here.

Maybe him and his camp know something we don’t, but unless his metabolism is that of a thousand Rich Franklins I’ll remain skeptical of this move.

        @jazz -
        You’re probably right.
Marcus Davis is probably doing what he can to keep this thing going as long as he can.
If the guy can make 155 I wish him well, but Jeremy Stephens is no joke, and no easy intro into the lightweight division…

“I dont think Marcus can do this cut and be great at lw…”

Kind of funny statement, since he is at best moderately decent at ww too.

You know that..I think he is going to to show up in great shape and ready to fight. He knows this is going to be his last chance to do some great thinkgs in a division. That does’nt mean he thinks he is gonna make a run at a title. He is a smart guy. I think he did this to try and have a few last great fights, with better results. Cause even though he has lost a few as of late, he is still in great fights.

This one is hard for me cause I would like to see Marcus do great, but I also am a huge Stephens fan.

I think Joe Silva is too cause, he keeps giving Stephens the fights he asks for. That either means they like the kid or, he knows how to pick a great fight.
I think Stephens will do pretty well in this fight cause Marcus is the kind of guy who will go for it and try to attack. And if that happens, Jeremy will respond.

Should be fireworks.(should be) We thought the same thing with Melvin

I don’t know how the cut will affect Davis, but I love watching him fight and hope he does well.

I like Markus and his approach to fights, always a solid performer and entertaining. I am wondering about his predictability however, he does seem somewhat one dimensional and while he does it pretty well does it make it easier for his opponents to know what’s coming.
Game plans are so important and knowing your opponent in MMA, and if you make no changes then nothing changes.
I suspect Markus is hoping to bring the same punching power to the LW division that he has at WW, two problems i see are of course the weight drop could sap his energy and of course the same old approach could put him right back at predictable.

Maybe Marcus’ New Years Resolution is to lose 50lbs. Seems like if you bundled half the fighters together on this card – they’d be about equal to Brock’s walk around weight.

  • Random says:

I always love to see Marcus Davis in the cage. His last couple of fights haven’t been good, so I hope it is the best choice he has, cause I don’t want to see him out of the UFC.

  • Jeremy Stephens says:

WOW Marcus has a 10/100 % chance here stephens won against melvin and either oneof them would destroy Marcus even Nate diaz DESTROYED HIM he has no chance against JStephens MARK my words he cannot deal with the speed in the lw division and cannot handle jeremys explosivness dont get me wrong should be a hell of a fight but jeremy will win by alot
