UFC 81: Tim Sylvia Added to Card, Likely to Face Nogueira

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Dec 5, 2007 at 1:22 pm ET12 Comments

Tim Sylvia has announced on his official website that he has been added to the UFC 81 “Breaking Point” fight card:

Just found out I’m fighting February 2nd, on the Super Bowl show in Las Vegas. I can’t say who I’m fighting yet, but I’ll let you all know as soon as I can.

Taking yesterday’s news that Randy Couture declined a title bout against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira into account it would appear extremely likely that Sylvia will take on Nogueira at the February PPV event. The bout is expected to be promoted as a co-main event alongside Brock Lesnar’s UFC debut against former champion Frank Mir.

    Wasnt this already posted? haha

  • Kind of though this actually confirms the rumors partially and is the best source as it’s directly from Silvia. I am guessing it will become official this Saturday perhaps so they can announced it at the TUF 6 finale.

  • FixXeR says:

well I hope so! I really want to see this match!

  • shay says:

Sylvia via decision. I think Tim’s jab will help keep this fight standing but nogs chin is to strong for a KO.

i still cant believe randy is dodging nog

  • holy_dave says:

I don’t really like Tim, but after wathing the Herring fight, I think Tim going to come into this fight with guns ablazing and knock Big Nog out cold in the second.

  • oscar says:

This fight will be good for Nogueira, after his fight with Hearing, which I still think smelled fishy. Hearing” let him “survive past the first and second, Hearing could of finished Nogueria easily after he knocked him down in the first, all he had to do was ground and pound for a few more seconds, but he let him up TWICE!!!!! Please dont let outside forces inject themselfs like BOXING.

Nogueria will beat Sylvia just like Randy did. Once that happens fans will understand why Randy is scared to risk a fight with Nogueria. Randy wants a payday with Fedor.

Am I the only one who is bothered by the Hearing Vs. Nogueria fight? I saw it again the other night. Am I being paranoid? now you can bet as far as what round the fight will end, just like boxing.

  • Vampslayr says:

Sylvia has always been suspect to good ground opponents. The trouble is getting him to the ground. If Nog can get the takedown and withstand the punishment he’ll take attempting to take Tim to the mat he can win.

Is this interim title or only 3 rounds?

    Sylvia > Nog

  • scotchydow says:

I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Sylvia get KOed or tapped by Nog. Nogueria is surprisingly strong, and isn’t as small as he looks. I too hated the fact that Herring let Nog get away with that fight, but it was in no way fixed. Did you see how out of shape Herring was. His punches on the ground were like big wet noodle slaps. He realized he wasn’t generating any force behind his punches and wanted to try it on his feet again. He just isn’t the smartest fighter, thinking he could keep throwing that lame (unquardinated) kick over, and over again. This whole thing is leading up to Brock ending 2008 as champ. I hope Vera gets the title shot before Brock though, so he can move down to lightheavy after winning the heavyweight title. He can beat Sylvia.

  • oscar says:

Ive seen Hearing fight in pride many times, every time hes had an opponent hurt hes gone after them hard, who doesnt. No matter how hurt or out of shape a fighter is, instinct comes into play in that situation. Which is why I was so surprised for Hearing to let Nogueria recover. It looked very odd.

Any top heavyweight can beat Sylvia. At this point he doesnt deserve a title shot, even if its just an interim title.

  • Vampslayr says:

I still say if you have an interim title, Sylvia has to be involved. He was the last champ before Couture won, and as many of you know, I’m no fan of Tim’s.

  • oscar says:

Tim was a Champ at a time when there were a bunch of chumps. Now the UFC has legit heavyweights and not just Arlovski. If Tim can beat a top rank heavyweight and not just and underweight heavyweight like Vera, then Tim deserves a title shot. Tim just hasnt fought great fighters. Any true champs record has great names attached to it.
