UFC 121 PLAY-BY-PLAY
GABRIEL GONZAGA VS. BRENDAN SCHAUB
Round 1 – Gonzaga and Schaub touch gloves to start the UFC 121 main card. Gonzaga controls the center of the Octagon as Schaub circles to start the first. Schaub fires the first punch, then Gonzaga closes in for a leg kick. Schaub sneaking through with the jab, then catches a kick and unloads a right but Gonzaga stays on his feet. Gonzaga throws, but it’s Schaub who connects again and again. Gonzaga can’t pull the trigger and Schaub tags him again. Gonzaga finally connects with head kick and follow-up, but Schaub continues to throw. Hard leg kick lands for Gonzaga. Gonzaga grabs for a takedown, but quickly gives it up. They trade punches in the center of the cage and Schaub continues to get the better of the exchanges. Schaub stuns Gonzaga in a wild exchanges then pours on punches, putting Gonzaga down but he’s saved by the bell. MMAFrenzy.com scores the first for Schaub 10-9.
Round 2 – Gonzaga stalks forward to start the second, but Schaub continues to beat Gonzaga with punches. Gonzaga grabs Schaub again, but again quickly lets go. Schaub connects with a combo that backs Gonzaga up. Schaub blasts Gonzaga with jabs. Gonzaga with a leg kick, before avoiding Schaub’s punches. Schaub weathers another leg kick and unloads a combo finished with a knee against the fence. Gonzaga can’t find the mark with much besides the leg kick, and Schaub closes out the round with more punches. It’s another 10-9 round for Schaub, who’s now up 20-18.
Round 3 – Gonzaga looks for an early takedown, but Schaub sprawls and stays on his feet. Schaub lands the jab again on the bloodied Gonzaga, who’s offering little and has stopped firing leg kicks that connected earlier. Schaub connects over and over with combos and Gonzaga has no answer. Gonzaga needs a finish, but doesn’t pick up the pace until the final seconds, connecting again with leg kicks before stopping a last-second takedown and taking Schaub’s back at the bell. The round goes to Schaub again and he should get a 30-27 win.

TITO ORTIZ VS. MATT HAMILL
Round 1 – Ortiz attacks Hamill from the start with punches and head kick and looks to keep on the pressure, but things settle down. Hamill catches a kick, trips Ortiz to the ground, and goes to side control, but Ortiz escapes a head lock and they return to their feet. Ortiz fires more kicks to the body and head, but Hamill continues to stalk forward. Hamill closes in, but Ortiz shrugs him off and unloads another kick. Hamill connects with the jab. More kicks by Ortiz, followed up by a combo. Hamill tries to clinch, but Ortiz backs out. Mouse under the eye of Ortiz, but he’s outpointing Hamill on the feet. Round 2 – After standing early, Hamill shoots in but Ortiz sees it coming and throws him off, then gets into the clinch and unloads a knee. Ortiz and Hamill trade more punches in the center of the cage, then Ortiz fires more kicks. Ortiz connects with a combo then drives Hamill to the cage with a knee to the body. Hamill finally gets an opening and scores and easy takedown, but Ortiz gets him under control in his guard. Hamill lands come ground and pound, but Ortiz stays active off his back and tries to lock on the triangle. Hamill gets to side control in a scrable and grinds away with elbows. Hamill stays in control, but Ortiz gets back to half guard as the round ends. The second goes to Hamill 10-9, making the fight even at 19-19.
Round 3 – Hamill finds the mark with his jab to start the third. Tito connects with a right that forces Hamill to backpeddle and follows up with a head kick. Hamill move forward, but Ortiz is firing more punches. Hamill sneaks a combo in, then comes back with an uppercut that connects. Hamill lands the jab, then Tito rushes forward with punches. Ortiz avoids an uppercut and lands with a body kick. Hamill and Ortiz have both slowed, but continue to trade combos. Hamill scores another takedown that could decide the fight. Hamill unloads ground and pound from half-guard and Ortiz appears helpless to get up. Ortiz throws punches from the bottom, but Hamill keeps him pinned and should take the round 10-9 and the fight 29-28. Ortiz raises Hamill’s hand after the fight ends.

DIEGO SANCHEZ VS. PAULO THIAGO
Round 1 – Thiago quickly takes control of the center of the Octagon, then stuffs an early takedown from Sanchez and unloads some knees. After a struggle against the fence, then return to the center of the cage and Sanchez looks for an opening for punches. Thiago closes in and trips him to the ground, then tries to unload from side control. Thiago nearly gets the D’arce in a scramble, but it slips. He tries again and locks it on, but Sanchez escapes and they head back to their feet. Sanchez moves forward and unloads punches. Sanchez presses for a takedown while Thiago works for a guilotine, then Thiago blasts Sanchez with a combo before the bell. MMAFrenzy.com gives the first to Thiago 10-9.
Round 2 – Thiago and Sanchez trade wild punches to start the second and Thiago seems to win the exchange. Sanchez rushes in again and misses with punches, but ends up on top of Thiago in a scramble. Sanchez unloads body shots before Thiago gets back to guard, but Sanchez is quickly back to side control. Thiago works for a kimura, but Sanchez breaks free. Thiago hits Sanchez with an elbow in the back of the head, but the fight quickly resumes. Thiago threatens with another kimura, but Sanchez gets free and back into guard. Thiago flips Sanchez off him with his feet, but Sanchez catches up to him against the fence and slams Thiago back to the ground. Sanchez gets Thiago’s back and unloads punches before Thiago stands in the final seconds. Sanchez takes the second 10-9 and the fight is now even 19-19.
Round 3 – Sanchez is quickly back on top to start the third and moves to side control. Thiago gets the kimura again, but can’t finish and Sanchez takes his back. Sanchez locks on the body triangle and beats Thiago up with punches between looking for the choke. Sanchez is briefly in full mount before Thiago escapes and trips to the canvas. Sanchez just misses an up kick and gets back into half guard before Thiago goes for a leg in a scramble. Sanchez takes the back again and drops more punches. Thiago tries for an arm triangle, but Sanchez back into guard an unloads more ground and pound. Sanchez finishes the fight with another flurry of punches. Sanchez wins the final round 10-9 and should earn the win 29-28.

JAKE SHIELDS VS. MARTIN KAMPMANN
Round 1 – Shields opens with an early high kick and quickly gets into the clinch. Kampmann defends and early takedown, but Shields keeps on the pressure and gets him down. Shields moves to side control, but Kampmann keeps him under control and gets back to half guard. Shields gets mount, but Kampmann escapes back to his feet. Kampmann knees the body in the clinch while Shields looks to take him down again. Shields drags Kampmann down, but they get right back up. Shields and Kampmann stall in the clinch before finally separating. Shields follows up body kick with a jab. Kampmann counters with jabs of his own, then stuffs another takedown. Shields fires more leg kicks, then goes for another takedown late but Kampmann sprawls. MMAFrenzy.com gives the first for Shields 10-9.
Round 2 – Kampmann and Shields trade punches in the center to start the second before Shields gets into the clinch. Kampmann blasts Shields with a knee and briefly grabs the neck, but gives it up and Shields gets him to the ground. Kampmann snags a guillotine, but Shields escapes to side control. Kampmann explodes back to his feet and unloads knees in the clinch. Shields eats another knee, but takes top control again then mount. Round 3 – Shields looks for another takedown to start the third, but Kampmann stays on his feet and fires a head kick. Shields grabs a leg and tries to reverse, but Kampmann locks on a D’arce. Shields escapes, but Kampmann stays in control. BROCK LESNAR VS. CAIN VELASQUEZ
Round 1 – Lesnar circles and immediately shoots for a takedown, but Velasquez stays standing. Brock unloads punches and a knee, then gets Cain to the ground but he can’t keep him there. Lesnar presses Velasquez to the cage in the clinch and trips him down, but he’s instantly standing again and they separate. They trade wild punches, then Velasquez takes Lesnar’s back and tees off with punches. Lesnar explodes to his feet and spins away, but Velasquez keeps on the pressure. Velasquez hurts Lesnar then drops him with a combo against the fence. Velasquez pincs Lesnar down and drops punches. Lesnar grabs a foot and gets to his feet, but Velasquez drops him again and continues to ground and pound to earn a first-round TKO.
