Rumor: Nogueira vs. Sylvia Has Been Signed for UFC 81

Posted by contributors on Dec 3, 2007 at 12:57 am ET25 Comments

Several sources close to Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira are claiming that the former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion will clash with former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Tim Sylvia at UFC 81: Breaking Point. Apparently, recent negotiations between the UFC and Randy Couture have not been productive, and the fight between Nogueira and Sylvia could be for the vacant UFC Heavyweight Title.

UFC 81: Breaking Point is scheduled to take place on February 2nd, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada during the Super Bowl weekend. The event will also feature the UFC debut of former WWE superstar, Brock Lesnar as he takes on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir.

    I hope nog hurts gigantor

  • scotchydow says:

Man, this is conflicting? If Randy is going to fight, then this better just be a 3 round #1 contendership fight. I feel like I am getting a bad case of the ol’ “blue balls” here folks. PRICK TEASES!-

  • Sean says:

I’m sure something official will be announced on the Dec 29th event.

  • the truth says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • ravine says:

i agree with truth…jus cuz tim beat vera (in a real boring fight i might add) that shouldnt mean that he deserves a title shot…and wat has nog done to deserve a shot…i totally disagree wit this desicion and hope that both of them injure themselves during the fight

  • FixXeR says:

I guess im a hater. Go Sylvia!!! I hope he knocks Nogs block off. He should, Nog has been disappointing. Well, I guess he has only had one fight…but like most of the Pride fighters….im not impressed.

  • Levente says:

Oh no! Kongo against Nog would have been a good fight. So as Kongo against Sylvia. But this one… I can see an another three round boredom. Or a five round, if this is for the title. I don’t think that Nog will be able to take Sylvia down, because he has a good takedown defense. And I also can’t see Sylvia knock Nog out. He has a good chin, and he’ll be aware after that Herring headkick. So we’ll see the ordinary sprawl and brawl from Sylvia, or should I call it sprawl and jab?

  • Micah says:

i’m going to have to say that:
Nog barely beating Herring (who he had beaten twice previously) shouldnt be enough for a title fight.
Sylvia was champ for a while, so I can understand him vs Vera (who hadnt fought in about a year) being for #1 contendership.

but what about Kongo? i definitely think it should be Kongo vs Sylvia, but thats just me… who knows.

  • Joe T says:

    Sylvia…SYLvia…SYLVIa…SYLVIA…

  • Eddyr92806 says:

Randy is a greedy mother f’n piece of $#it!!!

  • sean says:

I don’t know about greedy.. MMA makes a small fraction of what boxers make when it is way more dangerous to do MMA than box.

  • GIP says:

#10- randy couture has done more for the sport of mma then any other fighter ever. the guy doesn’t need more money. you obviously don’t know what the guy is all about. so untill you do shut the f*** up eddyr92806.

nog/sylvia- wasn’t jumping around my house pumping my fist or nothing but it’s a former ufc hw champ against a former pride hw champ. i think you have to take into acount what both of these guys have done in mma so far in their career. i think arlovski deserves a mention for sure. kongo needs another big win or 2 before he gets a shot. gonzaga lost his last fight. vera just lost his last fight. werdum lost his last fight. crocop has lost his last 2 fights. and randy, fedor, barnett aren’t even in the ufc. so that leaves 2 top 10 hw’s that aren’t coming off of a loss.

  • Jacob says:

The way I understood it was that the winner of the Sylvia/Vera fight would take on the winner of an eventual Kongo/Nogueira fight for the heavyweight title…I definitely think that Kongo deserves a shot, especially after dominating Cro Crop…hell they gave Gonzaga a shot after knocking his ass out, why not Kongo for dominating him for 3 rounds?

  • [...] vs. Gleison Tibau, Thales Leites vs. Nate Marquardt, and Alan Belcher vs. Ricardo Almeida. Rumors also indicate Tim Sylvia may face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria for the heavyweight title at the [...]

  • Vampslayr says:

I’ll start by stating I am not a Tim Sylvia fan. That being said, if Randy is to vacate the title and there is only going to be 1 match (as opposed to a tourny), Sylvia has to be in it. He is the former UFC HW champion and in his last run, the only person to defeat him is Couture. Nog/Kongo/…I don’t care. They’ll all get their shots. Of course I’ll be cheering for Nog and I can’t believe I actually just attempted to justify / praise Tim Sylvia. I need a shower.

  • FixXeR says:

Jeeez…why is everyone hating on Sylvia….he is a proven champion. He may look goofy and have a goofy style of fighting…..might even be a lil cocky, but who isnt. He has a great record against top fighters. I think if he got a rematch against Randy, the outcome might suprise some people. Now, let me hear it everyone! haha (Sorry, im from the Quad Cities…I got to support MFS)

  • sean says:

Nog is what 31-4 and Sylvia is something like 26-3 those are outstanding records so it’s only fitting that they fight for the belt. My problem with sylvia is the complaining that people do about boring fights i have to say he has fallen in that category as of late. Ever since the rubber match with arlovski every fight of sylvia’s has been boring and a decision. Not to include the couture fight, and sylvia didn’t do anything in that fight so you could argue that fight was boring on his part.
But back to my point. as far as records and careers right now in the HW division it should be Nog and sloth.

  • sean says:

If they strike a new deal with arlovski then I think the pitbull should fight Kongo for number one contender to fight the winner of Nog and Sloth

  • sean says:

On a completely different subject… when are they gonna bring Nog twin to the already seemingly stacked LHW division true he got destoyed by the african assasian in his last fight but he is still one hell of a fighter with a 12-3 record

  • FixXeR says:

Ok, so some of his fights are boring. Its all about wins. He wins fights. Just cause he doesnt knock people out all the time doesnt mean he doesnt mean anything. Many of his fights have been exciting. Maybe not latley, but he is a tough SOB and will beat Nog. I wish there was some way I could make wagers!! haha I am the only Sylvia fan in here!

  • Mojo says:

I agree with FixXeR. Some of his fights are boring as of late. But he is a tough SOB. Another Sylvia fan here.

  • FixXeR says:

Thanx Mojo. Everyone should dig down deep and find their inner MMA child haha. If you are a true fan of the sport and love the technique and art of MMA, then knockouts shouldnt matter. Its all about how you fight.

  • sean says:

I agree with you too fixxer I’m just thinking back to all the flack arlovski got for his “boring” performance against Werdum

  • oscar says:

Silvia getting a title shot is a joke. Randy woop his ass easily. What has Timmy really done besides beating a scared chinless Arlovski, where is Monson now, Vera is in the wrong weight class he should of been dominated by Sylvia, and Rico was done in his career.

Look at the records of the true champs in the sport, not just the numbers but look at the names they have fought, great fighters who have continued to fight. Where are all the fighters sylvia fought.? Sylvia was a champ when there was a bunch of chumps. Andre was the only name at the time. Which is why a rematch came so sudden.

Now that the sport has legitimate heavyweights, the UFC isnt depending on TiMMAAYY! (south park reference)

Nogueria is great, but something smelled bad when Heath Hearing let him win. All Hearing had to do was breath on Nogueria to win once he knocked him down. But Hearing decided to let him up and then waste a minute to let Nogueria regain himself. Even Joe Rogan was complaining. I hope Im wrong on this one. Nogueria dosent desrve a title shot based on that fixed fight.

How about a tournament for the title, A la Pride, since Randy is scared to lose and mess up a HUGE payday with FEDOR.

  • FixXeR says:

Regardless of what anyone wants so believe…Sylvia was injured going into the fight with Randy. Going 5 rounds with Randy is pretty good when u are injured. Randy is a proven champion but even with that…..why did he deserve a shot at the Heavyweight title when his last fight was a fight at the Light Heavyweight title….and he lost. I think you are going to see Sylvia get the title back and hold it for a while….again. I would really love to see the Randy Tim rematch….prolly wont happen…but it would be nice. Tim Sylvia is a good fighter…especially for his size.
