Jose Aldo Expects to Defend Title Against Mark Hominick at January’s WEC 54

Jose AldoFresh off his recent title defense over Manny Gamburyan, WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo recently said he expects to return to action in January and will likely take on veteran Mark Hominick.

“Whoever it is, I respect everyone. We already have a title defense in January against Mark Hominick, a Canadian very good at kickboxing,” Aldo told Tatame.

Aldo (18-1) continued his climb up the pound-for-pound rankings with a second-round knockout of Gamburyan at WEC 51 on Sept. 30, his eighth-straight WEC win in an 11-fight win streak that also includes wins over Cub Swanson, Urijah Faber, and Mike Brown.

Hominick (19-8) briefly left the WEC after falling to Josh Grispi in 2008, but returned with back-to-back wins earlier this year before earning a split decision over Leonard Garcia at WEC 51 for his fourth-straight win.

The January event is expected to be WEC 54 and will air on Versus.

I know there is a lot of talk about Aldo fighting a “Super Fight” in the UFC but I think he should move up to the 155 in the WEC first. Why not? They have great fights there too.

I think Aldo is going to dominate this fight like all the others. I dont see anyone beating him anytime soon. And for him fight LW for the UFC, i think he should take a one fight deal and see how he does. If successful, i think he should take a run at the LW title. I think he could do it.

There is no way he gets a “one fight deal” from the UFC. Why, you may be asking?

He is already signed to an exclusive contract with a Zuffa company – the WEC. He is about the only REAL champion the WEC has and I don’t see them letting him “test the waters” at 155 in the UFC when they still currently have 155ers in the WEC.

If, and only if, he dominates the WEC 155ers do I see him getting a chance to test the waters in the UFC.

Not to say that you’re wrong, but I’m thinking that before Aldo gets a chance to scrap with a WEC 155er and prove himself as you suggest, Zuffa is going to merge that weightclass with the UFC’s…

      • dbiz says:

That may be, jcohl, but the only thing that changes there is that there is no more WEC 155. Since nothing has come out officially on that I described how it would work as both orgs currently exist.

There are rumors that Aldo was offered a fight with Kenny Florian in the UFC, but turned it down, on the advice of his trainers and Ed Soares, because the time frame was too short to put on weight for the move up.

I say if Joe Warren gets another year and a half under his belt, he’ll have the tools to give Aldo some fits. Until then Aldo will be untouched.

  • skdrcr says:

Hominick fights at 155 doesn’t he. So i’m taking it Aldo is going up
to 155? Or does Hominick go down to 145 and get an automatic title shot?

    Doesn’t make sense to me.

  • flying squirrel says:

Hominick is coming down in weight class to 145. Not sure why that gives him an automatic title shot, but Aldo has run through his division already, so I say give him a shot, he’ll be a big 145′er where he should have more success. But not in this fight, Aldo runs through him like everyone else.

  • Tom says:

The odds are for surely stacked against him, but GO MARK HOMINICK!!! ;)
