Nick Diaz retained the Strikeforce welterweight title over KJ Noons on Saturday in the main event of “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2″ as he outpointed the challenger to earn a unanimous decision in a rematch of their first meeting in 2007.
Noons got off to a strong start as he connected on the champ in the opening round only to promptly be knocked to the canvas.
Though Noons recovered then connected again in a strong second round, Diaz took control of the later rounds, fighting through a cut like the one that ended their first matchup to outstrike Noons and earn a unanimous decision with scores of 48-47, 49-47, and 49-46.
In Saturday’s co-headliner, former champion Josh Thomson likely earned a rubber match with champ Gilbert Melendez despite a less-than-impressive controversial unanimous decision over Strikeforce newcomer Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante.
The card also saw Marloes Coenen claim he women’s 135-pound title with a third-round submission of champion Sarah Kaufman, while rising welterweight Tyron Woodley made quick work of Andre Galvao to start the Showtime-televised main card.
