World Extreme Cagefighting said Wednesday that lightweight contender Donald Cerrone “crossed a line of decency” after recently threatening to kill rival Jamie Varner in their upcoming rematch before calling the former champ a “bitch” and “fag” in an appearance on TapouT Radio.
“In a recent radio interview, WEC fighter Donald Cerrone went too far in talking about his upcoming fight with Jamie Varner and we believe he crossed a line of decency in doing so,” WEC Vice President Peter Dropick said in a statement.
“We will not tolerate a fighter who makes comments that are not consistent with our company values, nor will we tolerate the use of slurs that may offend any segment of the public. We are aware Donald issued his own immediate apology on Twitter, but we still needed to speak with him about it, and to issue our own statement making our position known.”
The long-awaited rematch between Cerrone and Varner co-headlines the WEC 51 fight card on Sept. 30 beneath featherweight champ Jose Aldo vs. Manny Gamburyan.

And this, little buddies, is why “Cowboy” ain’t ready for the big leagues. That and his inability to beat Varner/Henderson.
Theres no question….. zuffa or who ever needs to slam this Guy big. These things should not be tolerated. This is a great chance to make an example. No other professional sport wud allow it and mma better follow suit.
almost the same as the frank mir/brock lesner trash talk. frank is no longer on wec broadcasts.
Frank is no longer on the broadcasts because he was training for a fight! Mir is actuall a good anylist, imo!
Frank is no longer on the broadcast because he said he wanted to kill Brock. Notice he hasn’t been back since then?
Dana White called someone a “fag” and Mir said he was gonna try to kill Brock! which to me is a bigger deal than what Daley did after Kos said what ever he said? (it was so bad neither one of them have said what it was)
C’mon now…- Chris L.
Damn, it appears my sprayer is running low on Troll-B-Gon.
hahahaha
@dbiz – on first read I thought you posted that your SPAYer was running low, and I’d thought you’d come up with a whole new solution to troll-ism…
;)
if you don’t like a fighter i do, and comment about it. i will call you a troll! it doesn’t matter if its a joke or not. because i am a real fan and your not so! grow up or start the troll police cool guy
There’s two key things that you’re missing here, the things Dana, Mir, and Cerrone SAID were over the line of what is consider acceptable by the unwritten expectations of civilized society. What Daley DID was something that actually broke the written rules of the sport of MMA.
Mir went too far.
Cerrone went too far.
And Daley went WAY too far, so lets just leave him in the sportsmanship gutter where he belongs.
And someone else will eventually “cross the line” again, unless Zuffa issues some sort of definitive and memorable [to the fighters] punishment.
They can’t legally clip reported payouts, but maybe if these guys were hit with some penalty in their unreported payouts, we’d see and hear less of this sort of thing…
personally I think both of these fighters need a mute button. not just Cerrone.
As much as I like Mir and personally find him amusing, you’re 100% right…
I thought @chrisl was talking about Varner and Cerrone, not Mir.
In a perfect world…
I guess not any of you guys have ever used the term in any of your lives, right? It was in the heat of a conversation about someone he is going to FIGHT, not dance with. Give me a break. Get off the holier than thou stance already!!!!!!!!
I’m simply referring to the fact that I wish both of these guys would just shut up and fight. Both suffer from “foot in mouth” syndrome.
Timcat, this isn’t about what any of US might say in the heat of some fu<ktarded tequila-soaked moment.
And we're not talking about a half-drunken conversation in the parking lot of a bar here, or even some pre-fight noise at some truckstop org exchanged between two part-time scrappers, but rather the public comments of a contending fighter under the Zuffa umbrella in advance of a big fight on a major event for the WEC.
At this stage of the sport's development, anything that reflects poorly on Zuffa generally reflects poorly on the sport as a whole, seeing as how in North America Zuffa = MMA for the majority.
They're called standards, and the sports world in general and MMA in particular need them for widescale acceptance.
So maybe YOU could please give US a break and not try and excuse and trivialize a serious offense, ok?
Thanks…
Sorry but Timcat is absolutely right. Why was such a “serious offense” trivialized when it was committed by Frank Mir? Don’t split hairs about it either, it’s the same damn thing! And yes , he’s also right about the part where they’re not going to be dancing come Sept 30th. I think we as the as the public need to get off the high horse wagon and realize that this is fighting!! As a fighter that’s just what happens, you want to literally rip the guy apart when you’re in the cage and hurt him real bad. Just because Donald Cerrone has the cojones to actually verbalize that fact AFTER it was done by Frank Mir with next to no consequence, that dosen’t mean he should be ostracized for it. This as usual is being blown way out of proportion.
As Justin pointed out above Mir was stripped of his announcing duties and was forced to issue a retracting statement. He too was rebuked by the UFC and even faced more public criticism since his comments appeared on ESPN as well. Cerrone will probably get off lighter than Mir in the public eye but this may not bode well for him careerwise if he doesn’t prove a valuble asset with the looming absorbtion of the lightweight division. Hence… why I think he shut up…
Jchol, since when is someones words and they are just words a serious offense? Do YOU really think he would actually try and “kill” Varner? Neither do I. Normally I respect and agree with your opinion. But when you start attacking me personnally I take offense!! I not once called anyone out by their name the way you did and my opinion is MY OPINION. Thats what the comment thread is for, to voice your opinion. If you don’t like what I have to say skip over it and keep your feelings to yourself. I don’t presonnal;ly single anyone out nor do I knock what they have to say, even though I would love to at times. He said something on a stupid PODCAST that no one listens to anyway. Believe me it’s a stupid podcast because I made the mistake of downloading it on my IPOD and that is 2 hrs of my life I will never get back! So now that I am done with my rant we can be friends again!
Peace!
WOW….I think he might start crying
Oh and one more thing, I didn’t see the world get into an uproar over the bigoted and clearly racist comments that Chael Sonnen was making about Anderson Silva before their fight. “Anderson doesn’t come from a bowing culture, if you bow in Brazil they’ll hit you over the head and take your wallet.” Or how about the homophobic comments he made “I will not lay on the ground with another grown man between my legs, I don’t do that.” Or how about Rampage’s homophobic comments about Rashad, didn’t he also call Rashad a fag? These things are the crap that Zuffa need to be concerned about. These are the things that will make the sport look bad and leave a bad taste in the mouth of the fans and the public, not to mention, the MMA detractors out there looking for enough ammo to shut us down. It makes no sense to me whatsoever!! Two guys are about to FIGHT, god forbid them to talk about how badly they want to damage eachother… which is accepted in a fight! But by all means go ahead and be as racist, bigoted and homophobic as you want….GIVE ME A BREAK!!
And I searched on Google and don’t see any official evidence that Frank Mir was stripped of his announcing duties at the WEC either. That may indeed be why he hasn’t been back since but there is no information as to the reason, or even that he has been canned from those duties.
@timcat – my post wasn’t mean as a personal attack, and I’m sorry if you took it that way.
It was an honestl attempt to discuss the issue, nothing more.
Peace…
@Justice B actually there was plenty of that too, check in the forums, check the past posts, etc… there’s been uproar there too. I know for a fact I was very outspoken about what Chael said.
This is a sport where trash talk is key but it’s a also a sport where the slightest thing can go wrong and end in death. If a fighter is slammed at just the wrong angle he can snap his neck, if a choke is held too long a fighter can be asphxiated and suffer brain damage, you go for an RNC and the guy twists himself trying to get out and his neck snaps, a well placed punch to the head can end in death… etc…
So when you say you are going to kill someone people flip out because it’s that easy to do. It’s a slip of the tounge for him, probably didn’t think about it at the time but it does have consequences.
I don’t believe I have ever used homophobic slurs mostly because I have a large enough and flexible enough vocabulary to find more socially acceptable and responsible ways to insult people. And personally, I think it says a lot about the maturity and intelligence of those who do throw them around.
Mir made the comments in Feb of 2010, his last WEC gig was Jan of 2010. The first was due to training commitments but he was never brought back which broke the usual trend for him.
Tell em Timcat.
Why does this dude Bb#*%h…I mean Dbiz act like only his opinions count. And maybe his boyfriend jcohl. Calling people trolls is a little child like buddy….Anyway,I dont know why people are freakin out about this so much. Last time I checked we live in America and freedom of speech is part of our God givin rights. And like timcat said the guy is getting ready to FIGHT this dude and maybe thats how he gets pumped up. We dont know what kind of things Varnier has been sayin either. Just cause its not public does not mean he’s not sayin stuff like that to Cerrone. And I havent heard the interview, or read how things were said.
Has there ever been an athlete that was terminated from any organization or sport for something they (SAID) If their has let me know cause that would be interesting. I understand the fines and suspensions but getting rid of a fighter or any other athlete for doing something we all do every day weither were jokeing or not, and is our right to do…is kinda stupid.
IMO anyway.
knock off the name calling-Chris L.
Freedom of speech means the government can’t tell you what you can and can’t say. It doesn’t mean that you’re free from suffering consequences for the things you say, be they public backlash or punishment from your employer (unless of course that employer is the government).
No no, Justin. This the internet. Freedom of speech means no one is allowed to disagree with you.
There is no crying in MMA! Or is that baseball?
I think it’s both.
clearly baseball… ask Forrest and Tito…
Ouch…
I think Pat Barry has cried, too, but that was tears of joy.
I know one person who hasn’t cried, and that’s Don Frye, because Don Frye doesn’t have tear ducts, just tequila storage chambers that flow back into his system instead of out of his eyes.
Why what did TQR do wrong? Just because his opinions and POV don’t fall in line with yours? C’mon Jcohl, it’s about time you came down from your MMA high horse already. The guy is stating HIS OPINION! And the way you are feeling right now is the same way you make other posters feel at times when you post. I’ll be honest with you Jcohl, you come of as being a very passive aggressive, pompous, snob. And in many of your posts you reek of the air of superiority….. as subtle as it may be. Alot like Frank Mir IMO.
Let’s knock it off here. Stay on topic, No personal attacks, you know the drill.
Yeah I know the drill. The only time personal attacks are allowed is when they’re committed by Jcohl or when it’s extremely subtle….got it.
The difference here is…jcohl is (sometimes) right whereas TQR violated one of the chief rules of the site: no name calling. That is why he was censored by the mods.
When he feels he is able to responsibly put on his Big Boy Pants ™ and not resort to that, his opinion may be considered valid. Until then, his lack of vocabulary marks his as a sherpup cast off and someone who hasn’t quite earned the right to be taken seriously on a real site.
Nice.
dbiz said I’m sometimes right.
Coming from him, thats like the posting equivalent of making the final 3 of Top Chef…
;)
Are you kidding me…LMAO. Look at the way you two insult people all the time. Just cause I have the ba!!s to say something im wrong and my opinion does not count? That just tells me how arrogant some people can be on these boards.
And jcohl…seriously bro…is dbiz your idol? If him saying (sometimes) he thinks your opinion counts is something you get excited about, then im truly sorry for you. If only you could see that he thinks you too are not on his level of intelegents. Just by him pointing out the sometimes part proves it. Im for sure not always gonna be right with my opinion, buts its MY opinion. I dont need some arrogant, concided person pointing out every time HE thinks im wrong.
Props to J
@TQR – I’m pretty sure that dbiz’s sarcasm detector was going off when he read my post.
And its not like we haven’t given each other some sh!t at the frenZy before, both here on the main page and over at the forums, so lets not get too carried away with ourselves, ok?
bsbiz as moderator has asked that this back and forth come to an end, and I’m fine with following his directive.
Peace…
Wow, a Frank Mir comparison.
I’m much obliged, Justice B, as I consider Mir not only one of the best MMA HWs in the sport’s history, but one of its best and most knowledgable commentators, although I’m sure that you thought that was some sort of insult.
Funny stuff.
I’ve met Mir in several occasions, and I’m flattered to have my name and his in the same post, even when its one of yours.
As far as my not wanting to see or read anything more from TQR, I think chrisl took care of the issue, and I’m cool to leave well enough alone.
Hopefully TQR gets the message and honors the frenZied posting guidelines moving forward and engages positively in the MMA conversation.
Something I would also prefer that you do, rather than post nonsensically about how you think I ride a high horse, or that I’m passive aggressive, or whatever else you picked up from your word of the day calendar.
If you have a problem with me, then message me and talk about it like a man, but don’t embarrass both of us with garbage posts like the one I’m posting under again, ok?
Plus I’m sure that Kris and the mods don’t dig seeing off-topical negative stuff on the main page.
Name-calling and such is the stock in trade of lesser MMA sites, and not the frenZy. You’ve been here long enough to know better.
I would suggest anyone who is more into keyboard drama than intelligently discussing MMA to hit up one of those sites, and to please leave the frenZy for those of us who know and want to know more about the sport.
And finally, I’ve made this point previously both here at the main page and at the forums, in that qualifying something as “opinion” isn’t a blank permission slip for a poster to throw up whatever noise they feel like here at the frenZy on any given day.
Take this for what its worth Justice B, and if you can’t, then I’d suggest you simply ignore anything you see posted under my name, as it’ll probably make your frenZied experience more enjoyable to you…
Again pompous and arrogant. Don’t talk to me like I’m a child Jcohl. What you think you have the right to talk down to people as if they’re lesser than you when it pertains to the topic of MMA? And yeah qualifying something as an opinion doesn’t give you a blank permission slip, unless of course it’s you. And there is also a difference between name calling and stating the facts. Read your posts, like I said, they reek of the air of snobbish superiority. And FYI Frank Mir also holds the title of being one of the biggest trash talkers in the UFC, behind Chael Sonnen of course.
Justice B, seeing as how you are either unwilling or unable to accept my last post as the final comment of an unpleasant and ultimately pointless exchange, or how you couldn’t for whatever reason/s follow my very simple instructions of messaging me directly with your unsolicited and uninformed personal opinions of me rather than clutter the main page with them, I suggest you refrain from posting about me or under me again, and I’ll do likewise.
You’re clearly unable to stay on topic, even when prompted to do so by the mods, so do us both a favor and move onto something else and someone else, and this way we can avoid any further friction.
Peace…
You just have to have the last word huh? Anyways my opinion is my opinion and if the shoe fits …..WEAR IT! Now as far as the Cerrone incident, all I am trying to say is that if the standard applies to one, then it should apply to all. Rampage, Chael, Mir etc etc. I’m so tired of these things being blown out of proportion. I am in no way defending what Donald did, I believe it was wrong just like it was wrong for Sonnen, Mir and Rampage. But there are things that have been said by UFC fighters that are a mirror image of what has been said by Cerrone, and even worse.
That being said, why are we making such a big deal over this particular incident? When Chael Sonnen made those racist comments toward Silva and Brazilians in general, nobody called any attention to it, nobody within the organization stood up and said anything. Nobody stepped forward and said any thing along the lines of: “This crossed the line, trash talking is o.k, but we won’t tolerate bigotry, or racism within our organization.” In fact, it was encouraged and dissmissed as Sonnen “hyping the fight”. So all of a sudden saying you’re going to kill your opponent is somehow worse than that? I’m sorry but that just doesn’t fly for me.
As a moderator, I’m declaring this over. Next one to lob a verbal shot, no matter how subtle, will be put on mod for the rest of the evening.
As a poster, I agree that it wasn’t right for the UFC to just gloss over what Sonnen said about the Brazilians on general. Personal stuff isn’t as bad, but the generalizations were more than too much. I know a stink was raised on the site and that’s why I was not displeased that Sonnen lost. Hopefully, there is a little more class displayed by Sonnen next fight.
I think I’ve created a sh1t storm here. There are supposed to be no personal attacks here people. I am a very opinionated person and my views are not necessarily that popular. I have a VERY,VERY morbid sense of humor,(ask Justin about my facebook comments on Tom Brady),so I tend to keep them to my self alot. I have been with this site since the early stages to what it is today. Though I don’t post everyday I do read it everyday. We don’t need to fight among ourselves, lets leave that up to the fighters, ok?
Good point, and fair enough.
Apologies again if my earlier post seemed like an attack on you personally timcat…
