Josh Barnett Signs With Strikeforce

Josh BarnettFormer UFC heavyweight champ and PRIDE veteran Josh Barnett has signed a multi-fight deal to compete for Strikeforce, the promotion announced today.

Barnett (26-5) won the UFC title by stopping Randy Couture in 2002, but was stripped of the belt and dropped by the promotion after testing positive for steroids for the first time in his career.

“The Baby Faced Assassin” has gone 16-4 since, losing only to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and three times to Mirko Cro Cop in PRIDE while earning wins over the likes of Nogueira, Mark Hunt, and Aleksander Emelianenko.

Barnett is currently riding a six-fight win streak, but has been forced to score wins over Mighty Mo in DREAM and Geronimo dos Santos in Australia after again testing positive for steroids before a matchup with Fedor Emelianenko last July, which led to the collapse of Affliction.

He joins arguably Strikeforce’s most-stacked division, which also includes champ Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko, Fabricio Werdum, and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
