Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante will make his Strikeforce debut against former lightweight champ Josh Thomson at “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2″ on October 9 in San Jose, California, Cavalcante’s manager recently told MMA Weekly.
Cavalcante (15-3-1) rose into the lightweight rankings in 2007 following wins over Caol Uno, Vitor Ribeiro, and Andre Amade, but the Brazilian went winless in 3 bouts against Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri before bouncing back with a July win over Katsunori Kikuno in DREAM.
Thomson (17-3) dropped the belt to Gilbert Melendez in December, but rebounded with a win over Pat Healy in June to get back into title contention with his ninth win in 10 fights.
The Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons 2 fight card is headlined by a rematch between welterweight champ Nick Diaz and KJ Noons and also includes 135-pound women’s champ Sarah Kaufman vs. Marloes Coenen and Luke Rockhold vs. Matt Lindland.
