Hopefully Andre can show us what he’s capable of without laying on his back for 3 rounds like the Lentz fight

@jpmm – Well, according to Dan Hardy, a fellow Rough House fighter, Andre Winner didn’t exactly “lay on his back” for 3 rounds, but was rather somehow unfairly held in place by Nik Lentz’s arcane knowledge of some obscure MMA fighting technique apparently unknown in the British Isles, called wrestling ;)
There is a thread over at the forums detailing Hardy’s POV on the Winner-Lentz fight, which he expressed in typical Hardy style in a newspaper article which was passed on by the UFC Twitter, for those that are curious.

Hardy in this article made no mention of Winner’s complete inability to execute any sort of sweep, reversal, or counter, although Winner had ample opportunities with all the time he spent with his a$$ on the mat.
But rather Hardy fell back on the same tactic every one-dimesional striker does, crying “layNpray!” as often as he can and hoping enough fans are gullible enough to believe it.
To Winner’s credit he took his UD loss stoically by all accounts, and left the whinging to his training camp partner.

To be fair and accurate Lentz didn’t exactly put on a submission clinic like GSP did on Hardy, or bust out some old school Matt Hughes gNp, but he did score enough takedowns, exhibit enough ground control and display superior mat mastery in rounds 1&2 and then grabbed a mount and a rnc in round 3 to earn a solid [but not at all spectacular] UD.

Against Denis Siver, a more well-rounded fighter who seems to prefer to fight in the vertical plane, Winner will have an opportunity to prove Hardy right, although it probably won’t address the perceived issue of skillset mono-dimensionality in Winner [or for that matter Hardy].
From what I saw against Lentz, Winner doesn’t seem to be a particularly devastating striker, which might be why he didn’t make it onto TUF 8, but later onto TUF 9.
Against Siver, Winner had best show more aggression and well-roundedness than he did against Lentz, or he’ll most likely catch another loss, his 3rd in 5 fights.
A 2-3 record isn’t exactly the sort of thing that impresses Joe Silva and Dana White, so y’know how that goes…

Yeah I read that topic a day or two back. I worded my comment poorly. I should have said perhaps Andre can show us what he’s about without the immediate concern of being out wrestled for 3 rounds.

Should be a good ground war here.
