UFC Fight Night 12: Patrick Cote vs. Drew McFedries

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Nov 22, 2007 at 10:06 am ET8 Comments

Patrick Cote has announced on his facebook profile that he will be facing Drew McFedries on January 23rd at UFC Fight Night 12.

Cote (11-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) has emerged as a middleweight contender by winning his last three fights including his most recent win over rising middleweight and The Ultimate Fighter 3 winner Kendall Grove at UFC 74 in August. After starting his career as a successful light heavyweight Cote has since moved to the middleweight division capturing numerous championships in other promotions. He is currently the reigning TKO Middleweight Champion, winning the title with a TKO victory over Jason Day in June.

McFedries (6-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has been sidelined for months after a contracting a serious staph infection earlier this year. Losing his professional MMA debut to Nate Quarry, McFedries rebounded to defeat 4 straight opponents to make his way into the UFC. In his debut bout McFedries defeated Alessio Sakara by TKO late in the first round to emerge victorious. After dropping his next bout to the very tough Martin Kampmann, McFedries faced Jordan Radev at UFC Fight Night 10 winning the bout with an impressive 33-second knockout.

Forget McFedries, where the hell is Kampmann. With the recent discussions about 185 in the UFC, here is a darkhorse who hasn’t fought in the UFC since March (vs McFedries). Hopefully he gets over his injuries (knee?) and returns in 2008.

Cote, Cote-Cote-Cote. He’ll never keep Anderson Silva awake at night with fear, but I was impressed with his destruction of that cocky Grove. I also respect him for stepping it up against Tito a few years back and taking the fight at the last second.

    Cote > McFedries

This will be an interesting fight. Might even give the winner a shot at Silva (or Hendo)

  • GIP says:

i think these may be the only 2 in the mw division that would have a chance at beating silva. they are both heavy handed and are the elite stikers in the mw div. if these 2 can can ever become great at sub defence they’ll have a shot at the title one day. nobody has a chance against hendo though…not even silva.

  • Vampslayr says:

With all due respect and Henderson withstanding, the fighters with the best chance of beating Silva are currently outside the UFC. While anything is possible and these two “maybe” could improve enough to last in the ring with Sila, I would not say that Cote and McFedries could have a chance of beating Silva. I don’t think they stand a chance of beating Franklin either, at this time. Again, anything is possible and I look forward to seeing Cote improve his standing in the UFC but I don’t see either being a threat to dethrone Silva (should he defeat Henderson).

  • GIP says:

i meant the ufc mw division when i was talking about cote and mcfedries. these 2 punch the hardest and and because of their puching power they would have a punchers chance with silva. guys that would have real chances against silva other then hendo would be lindland, fihlo, lawler, and kang. can’t see these 4 coming to the ufc any time soon for one reason or another. it’s to bad because the mw div in the ufc could also be a stacked division.

  • Vampslayr says:

GIP – Either I had a brain fart or ate too much turkey.

Both would do well if they could cut to 185. I agree with the “puncher’s chance” but I wouldn’t bet on either. I think 2 of the 4 you mentioned will be in the UFC by the end of 2008. Dana has proven in the past that he can put aside personal conflicts with fighters if it means the best matches. While I like Kang, his stock is dropping and Filho is the guy I’d like to see most. I’d then be happy with either Matt or Lawler being a 2nd addition. I’m not sure how the WEC/UFC relationship works, but I can’t see them “holding back” Filho. He’s going to want a big payday and they won’t risk losing him to M-1. The UFC seems like a logical next step as he currently can’t get PPV bonuses in WEC.

  • Red says:

scotchydow, I could see what you mentioned happening. With the Middleweight division being a little thin, Cote or McFedries might get a title shot soon. With the additions of Hendo and Tanner to the Middleweight division; the winner of COte/McFedries might fight either one of them in 2008.

  • Sandman says:

I’m looking forward to Tanner coming back. The guy seems a little crazy. And tougher than hell to. After a fight or two if he wins he might be able to take on the spider.
