Thiago Alves will look to get back into the welterweight title hunt when he’s expected to return to action against John Howard at “UFC 124: St-Pierre vs. Koscheck 2” on December 11 in Montreal, Canada, according to MMAjunkie.
Alves (17-7) won seven-straight before coming up short against champ Georges St-Pierre last July, then was sidelined for more than a year before dropping a rematch to fellow contender Jon Fitch in August.
Alves failed to make weight for UFC 117 and Dana White wanted Alves to move up to middleweight, but the UFC President offered him one last chance at 170-pounds.
Howard (14-5) began his UFC career with four-straight wins over the likes of Dennis Hallman and Daniel Roberts, but was battered en route to a third-round doctor’s stoppage at the hands of Jake Ellenberger last month.
The UFC 124 fight card is headlined by welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre vs. opposing TUF 12 coach Josh Koscheck.

I guess it’s howard who gets alves and not pierce. The link above is likely just a rumor.
I like howard vs alves better for alves. Striker vs striker! Should be fireworks!
Yeah I’m a little bummed. I was hopeing that Thiago would knock out Pierce and have a “just keep my name outta yo’ mouth and we can keep it the same… N*gga!” moment.
pierce put it on fitch and almost ko’d him…i doubt thiago would beat pierce…pierce by ud
“Thiago Alves will look to get back into the welterweight title hunt”……….. he is way far from that in WW and I think being in WW is not good for him coz he have to lose so much weight that he becomes very weak at some point just before the match.
He had a major surgery prior to his most recent fight. That will make it more difficult to cut the weight. I do believe he finally hired a nutritionist to help with the cut, and that should help a lot.
He is an exciting fighter and love watching him fight, but if he ever misses weight again, or is so fatigued after the weight cut he has a lackluster performance, he should move up to MW without hesitation.
I hope Alves comes in at least 30lbs overweight for comic relief, just to announce his inevitable transition to 180! Maybe he coud weigh-in eating a deep fried twinkie and wearing a bib.
185*
Easy typo-police. Are you the same guy who replies with the grammar corrections? Just kidding – it was a quick post from my cell phone & oversight.
No, I’m the one who gets irritated by grammar and spelling.
Alves is much better than Howard..this should be an easy Win for Thiago
what about alves vs ellenberger?? howard is screwed
this is going to be a great fight…but anyone who counts out howard could be in for a surprise….Howard can win this fight
I think Howard can win this fight also, especially if Alves suffers from the weight cut. This time out, you would think, he is going to go the extra mile to prove he can still fight at WW, and he may pay for it with his strength and cardio. I know he’s hired a nutritionalist to help him cut the weight safely and effectively so as not to be drained before the fight. I for one hope he can do it, even if he loses in his next fight I would like to see a strong and effective Thiago. I think he likes being the big dog in his weight class, it obviously gives him a strength advantage against most of the other ww’s.
Just a quick question slightly off topic, does anyone on here know how much tickets were for the last Montreal event? I live in Ottawa and I would love for my first UFC event to be watching GSP beat the he!! out of Kos, but not sure I can afford it, any help would be appreciated.
Don’t know off hand, but i’m sure ticketmaster.ca or ufc.com would provide the answers you’re looking for.
Im suprised DW is giving Alves another shot at 170, he sounded adament against it right after Alves last fight. Also, I would not count Howard out in this one.
I hope they put jones jones vs a unnamed top 10 apponent on this card, that would be three sick ass fights along with the new years card to follow.
Good fight. both need the win, i see alves coming out on top for sure
