Chael Sonnen will get another shot at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva early next year and light heavyweight champ Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua will face Rashad Evans in the spring or early-summer, UFC President Dana White announced today on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Sucks I Won’t See Rashad In Action Until 2011. Sonnen Doesn’t Deserve A Rematch Right Away He Should Have To Work His Way Back Up To The Top.
i agree, not so much for rashad, but the sonnon yeah no way… boo
Sonnen doesn’t deserve a rematch against Silva? He has to work his way back up? Silva is at the top and Sonnen DOMINATED him… why should he have to work his way back up by fighting lesser competition??? Sonnen has already proven himself…
I think Sonnen deserves the rematch on multiple levels
He gave Silva the most competitive fight of his UFC career.
He will sell the fight again based on this, its big money for the UFC
The fight itself was entertaining and a little shocking, very few people gave him any chance let alone belived he would dominate 23 minutes of the fight. I for one am interested to see if this happens again without any rib injury excuses.
It was the right fight to make in my opinion
he deserves a rematch just not a immediate one
Dana disagrees. And that means he does, indeed, deserve an immediate rematch since he and Joe Silva have forgotten more about MMA than anyone here has ever known.
sonnen easily deserves a rematch he had anderson beat the whole match and in he got a lucky triangle the rematch will prove that he can beat anderson his wrestling was too much for him in the first place and the wrestling is excatly why if he ever fights gsp he will get dominated
i agree he should fight belfort and winner gets silva. but looks like they are gonna do okami vs belfort for next contender or even throw leben vs belfort to make it a slugfest contender fight.
Sonnen deserves it – but more people would pay to see sonnen fight vitor with the winner getting a shot at Anderson as opposed to vitor fighting leben or okami
It won’t be Leben vs Vitor, DW hasn’t talked Leben in title picture at all yet but has talked Okami in title picture, so I expect to see Okami or maybe Marquardt if he gets out of next fight relatively injury free. I’d prefer to see Marquardt vs Vitor over Okami, i think that’s a much better fight.
IMO, I don’t think Marquardt is going to get passed Palhares. That is one tough dude and his last loss was to Hendo 2 years ago. Granite he hasn’t fought top shelf opponents since then, but he is still a dangerous guy with slick JJ. Belfort vs Okami would be a good stand up fight, technical strikes vs power strikes.
As far as the rematch goes, I have argued with buddies as to why I don’t think an immediate rematch is warranted, but I can see the PPV sells and fan draw from Dana’s POV. It has been quite awhile since we have seen so much talk about the MW division.
Im not sure how I feel about the rematch. I kinda feel like Chael deserves it but I feel like he doesnt at the same time. I think the UFC saw how big the numbers were from the PPV buys and how competetive the fight was and said “well thats the only thing that makes sense right now.” Vitor wants to fight in November. He wanted another fight before fighting Anderson anyway. And everyone else is already booked for fights. It makes sense on a business level. And really, who else is gonna give Anderson a fight like that? I just hope we get to see Anderson vs Vitor before Anderson retires.
I agree with Chael, have them do TUF while we wait for the fight, and get some entertainment. It would really sell the fight this time. Or it would backfire and people would get sick of hearing him talk trash. I for one would like to see it. But either way the fight would do big numbers again, just based on Chaels last performence.
It would be sick if they brought that card back here to Portland for this one. (even though i know that wont happen) It would be awesome. Chael would have a huge hometown following.
Looking forward to seeing how the next one goes down.
Well you never know about bringing it to Portland. If Dana really wants Silva to lose then he should think about this option and we portlanders will be the winner either way!!! :)
Would love to have another card here in Portland as well and I believe this one would sell A LOT better then UFC 102 did. But a fight with this magnitude will more than likely be in Vegas.
i agree on marquadt not getting passed palhares, gonna be tough i think. squirrel your right on not mentioning leben but the guy is getting close. i forgot that he is waiting for wandy to get healthy so they can throwdown.
Wait… So Vanderlai was supposed to fight Akiyama. Then Vanderlai got injured and Leben stepped up and beat Akiyama. So wouldn’t Leben be due to face someone higher on the ladder than Vanderlai next? (No disrespect to Vanderlai, he is one of my favorite fighters)
Shame were going to have to wait for so long for Shogun to return.
Please.
Before any of you go any further posting about what Chael Sonnen deserves or not deserves, go check out the previous thread on this.
Everything you should and need to know has already been posted.
If you still don’t see reason after reading thru the weeds to get to the wisdom, then maybe the UFC just isn’t for you.
Thanks…
Or we can just comment on recent events. Thankyou
Or, you can try making sense when you post underneath me…
You said: “Before any of you go any further posting about what Chael Sonnen deserves or not deserves, go check out the previous thread on this.”
I say “Why search thru archive from a couple weeks ago, before we leave a comment?”
That why there’s a comment box, on this and every article.
I know you monitor this site, I may not always agree with you but I respect you opinions.
But to tell everybody NOT to post unless they read the last months worth of comments first make you sound like a…well I won’t start calling you names but I hope you get my point.
@koloco9
You don’t need to do too much digging in archives, because the previous post is just few posts below this one and was posted exec same days.
I guess what Jcohl wanted to say for most of people who try to complain if Chael deserves or not the rematch , put some normal thinking prior to posting here, other ways instead of having proper conversation about MMA we have to deal with junk posts.
@jcohl is not a moderator, admin, or monitor of the site… a dedicated poster/reader yes but only that.
You both have your points here and I suggest it should just be laid to rest. Yes, it does get old when the same arguments keep popping up but if events keep popping up that pertain to the argument then the argument persists. Whether we like it or not it will keep popping up and if you would rather make a point by pointing out what you have said previously go ahead.
Apologies to all concerned, particularly Kris and the mods, if at any time I ever gave anyone the impression that I’m anything more than a poster here.
And apologies for trying to “bottom line” here.
By all means, please have at it, and as chrisl suggests I’m fine leaving well enough alone.
Peace…
No beef here.
I think we all agree. The same arguments get fleshed out over and over, beat to death. But what else can you do. It’s like watching ESPN, they talk about the same shit all the time. At least here we give our two cents instead of just yelling at the TV.
As far as jcohl, mod or not, he helps keep the bs to a minimum and usually has a mature and logical view on things. Those are the two main reasons I visit this site.
Belfort vs Sonnen makes as much sense as Cain vs JDS made about six months ago. People were calling for that HW fight when both fighters were without a scheduled bout. But signing that fight would have eliminated one of those two HW from contention, for a bit anyways, and the same goes for Belfort/Sonnen. Belfort loses, he has to fight at least 2 more fights (and win both) before we can count on seeing him get aligned with Silva. Sonnen loses, then how does the UFC justify a Sonnen/Silva re-match AKA massive money maker?
The UFC will shelve Sonnen until Silva is ready, so that the re-match remains relevant. And so they should. He sold the PPV beautifully and out-did 99% of fans expectations of him. He also made Silva look human, which is something no other UFC fighter has done yet.
I for one agree with Dana and will look forward to the re-match.
Ufc this isn’t wwe this rematch stuff is bogus. I’m gonna stop buying big event cards cause I already expect the rematch. Horrible but ehhh Dana is Dana. Won’t be anywhere as good as 1st.
And thats exactly what you should do.
Don’t buy the PPV if the UFC isn’t meeting your MMA matchmaking standards.
I know I don’t buy products I don’t like, and neither should anyone else…
Look, it doesn’t matter which side of the debate you are on, you have a very good argument regarding the legitimacy of an immidiate rematch regardless of whether you are for or against it.
The truth is that Chael not only showed us a perfect blueprint on how to beat Anderson Silva, but he also showed us a perfect blueprint on how to lose to Anderson Silva, as Chael became the third man to take Anderson to the ground and yep the third man to get submitted.
The nature of their first fight really isn’t why Dana is calling for a rematch. Sure, Chael had wild success for the first 23 minutes. Sure, Chael almost won. But ‘almost’ doesn’t get the job done, and ‘almost’ doesn’t get you a rematch. Ever since news of the immidiate rematch was released, complete and utter pandemonium has broken out here and mmafrenzy. That is because this is such an electric topic in the MMA community right now. It doesn’t matter which side of the debate you are on, we all clearly have a passionate opinion when it comes to this topic, hence the pandemonium that has been unleashed. That is the real reason that this immidiate rematch is happening. It’s not because Chael was sooooo close to winning that Dana wants to give him a second chance. It’s not becasue Anderson was hurt and now will be fully healthy so he can quiet his critics.
It is flat-out because there is one big giant hype-train running at full throttle right now and that translates into nothing but a big giant PPV sell. If instead Dana would have confirmed a Vitor-Sonnen fight for later this year, there would have been a sort of vanilla response from everybody compared to the reactions that were drawn from the news of the immidiate rematch. Anderson and Chael are fighting again because this rivalry right now is hotter than anything around. period. If Chael were to lose before fighting Anderson again, then all that hype and all this passion gets flushed down the toilet alongside about a million potential PPV buys.
You can argue all you want whether the rematch is warranted, but you are missing the point. Can you really argue against Dana making this call? Absolutely not.
Oh my gaaawwwwddd I’m on team jacob!! !!:-p
Hahahaha
Great points my friend!!
Maybe Silva will actually come out looking like he trained for this fight…..and that’s coming from a Silva fan.
wow, homegrown golden boy gets a shot before his time according to Dana’s personal whims.
so if a revamped silva destroys Chael (yea yea chael is great, bla bla, has the blueprint – but hey, best fight of his life and- he tapped out) .
Anyway,
If Chael then loses a 3rd fight in a row to vitor by KTFO just for example, yet he’s still the best post-prime-lindland/hendo- tough match-up for anderson.
would Dana be so intent on dethroning Spider that he’d bump him to the front of the line again?
Kinda makes it the American championship not the world championship.
Prime Hendo, was similar to Chael but better and much heavier hands. They both fought great and lost. Maia wasn’t able to take it into the realm where he could win – he tried got beaten up, waited for a 5th round miracle sub but never got the chance.
I’m way more psyched to see Vitor vs Anderson KO of ther year potential
Prime Hendo never fought in the UFC, much less against Anderson Silva.
When was there a Prime Henderson then? The guy had his best run as Pride collapsed.
that’s true, but unfortunately present day Chael is not quite in that league, but in that style he’s the best we’ve got unless sheilds moves up
Shields would get crushed by Silva. Agreed, Shields BJJ is fantastic, but he would be another leites or Maia for Anderson to pick away at. His wrestling while good is not overly fantastic and his striking is far below minimum standard.
That being said there has been more than the average instant rematches lately. Bonnar/Kristophersonwhatever, Shogun/Machida, Penn/Edgar, wasn’t Danzig and Wiman originally slated as a rematch? But the reason is because there was a LOT of controversy around those fights. Whether a bad ref call or a bad judging call or a bad judgement call by the fighter. Without those rematches we would live in coulda-shoulda-woulda land. While not perfect, rematches help resolve that problem.
This makes a lot of sense..So if Sonnen wins this time then that should setup another “immediate rematch”…cool (talk about a must see rubber match..the GSP thing can wait) Yeah Since Chael Sonnen lost but did well in the first fight, give these guys an immediate trilogy and by the time that is over in 2013 or whatever they can do the Silva vs GSP fight..great call Dana white…BUT wait….
If Anderson Silva beats Chael Sonnen again, which my sources say that he will, then it will be really funny to see what all of you Chael “huggers” or Silva haters have to say after that
Well no not really, If Sonnen dominates a fit Anderson this time round then there would be no need for a instant rematch. (IF)
what was the final poll at frenzy in favor of
Chael or Vitor getting the title fight?
I’m a bit surprised most polls said fans wanted Vitor Anderson first no?
Is Dana being honest saying he’s doing this for the fans – he seems on the level but the polls would indicate otherwise no?
so i’m guessing were never going to see St. Pierre fight silva
Paquiao-Mayweather will happen first…
Ha!! Thats your best one yet.
Seriously though I agree 100% Pierre v. Silva is never going to materialize but to be honest I’m glad. Weight classes are there for a reason.
And all this talk from Dana White about giving the fans what they want huh!!?? I swear we been asking for GSP and Silva lonnnng before Chael even became a title contender!! Dana and Crew just thought GSP would get murdered by Silva so they didnt want the CHOSEN one to lose. For awhile They keep saying Silva was too big and GSP would have to bulk up in muscle etc etc.. Just any excuse not for this fight to happen no matter what the FANS WANTED
Dana just talking and hyping what he wants cause when he talks about someone deserving a title shot all that is just BULLS***
We’ve seen people like Fitch among others who deserve a title shot not get one OR promised a title shot but after the fight Dana Sayz ohhh yeah they are definitely in the Mix then change his mind.. But the James Toneys and Brock Lesnar walk right in and get top tier guys ON PPV and title shots right off the bat… DESERVING!! HA… What does that mean… It means YOU SELL is the only thing Deserving if anything about that.
Honestly I love what Dana and Comp. Have done as regards to MMA and evolving it into mainstream as the sport it is, not as some bloody fight or no holds bar contest. They done so with Class and Strict Business and I love that…! When it comes down to who fights who and who are #1 and Who actually deserve to fight for titles and Different Weight class fights there is some work or issues to be worked out buuuuttttt hey who am I. I am just a fan.
Actually, OT1, Dana has said that GSP needs to clean out his weight class before he gets another “super” fight. And with Fitch waiting for a title shot and Shields coming in, I can see his point (moreso with Shields than Fitch – we’ve seen that one already).
If Silva cleans the cage with Sonnen, that weight class is cleared. Period. But GSP still has to get past Koscheck, Fitch, and presumably Shields if he keeps winning.
I guess I don’t mind moving between weight classes for these “super” fights, but it needs to be when there aren’t legit contenders on hold as a result. So until both are totally cleared out, I don’t want that fight to even be considered.
@Chrisl
Or Fedor vs Brock :-)
@muaythai4life thanks
@onlytrue1 @dbiz I personally don’t like inter-division superfights when there is this much of a discrepancy between the two fighters in size. Silva has GSP by 5-6 inches on height alone and Silva cuts from the range most 205′s do. That’s why I don’t have a problem with Silva at 205. However, at 185 GSP is smaller than most of the guys out there and in wrestling/grappling that accounts for a lot more than it does in striking, and that’s not to say it doesn’t matter in striking either. GSP is reportedly cutting from 190 for fights. So obviously, he’s a much smaller guy. That’s why I think it’s a fight that really doesn’t prove all that much if it happens at 185 and if Silva cut to 170 it wouldn’t prove anything either. So this is a case wherein a lot of people may want to see but the UFC knows/fears that it would really just be a letdown.
I would say though that before something like this is even considered that I agree that the weightclasses should be completely devoid of viable challengers. However, 170 seems to keep getting deeper while 185 needs some new blood to be honest. So I see Silva looking for another opponent anywhere while GSP will have a steady wave the next few years of talent coming at him.
so let me get this straight, chael doesn’t deserve a rematch instead should fight vitor in november. Well who is anderson silva going to fight in the meantime. Or does the winner of sonnon belfort get anderson in january february. Ur all kidding 2 months 2 recover and train for the best middle weight in the world. Look at what happened when rua fought machida could be a quick sonnon KO immediate rematchs make sense when a guy get his ass handed to him for 23 minutes.
I think chael should get a rematch but it should not be neither his, nor anderson silva’s next fight. Imediate (championship)rematchs are only for fights where the outcome was not clear, like shogun-machida. There is not one person that says chael should have won that fight(he could have). The only reason Dana is doing it is because “the fans want to see it”. To give Chael another shot so soon is the same as giving Carwin another shot on his next fight. With all that said, Anderson should win that fight…
Sho’ Boat Evans is NOT the #1 contender, so why is he getting a shot at Rua? Doesn’t matter, because Shogun will beat Evans. But why waste our (fans) time? Why put up a fight between two fighters who we do not want to see? There are plenty of others, including a Machida/Rua III. That should be first and foremost. This rubber match will show the luck that was involved in Shogun’s victory and Machida will once again dominate, only he will not dominate until he gets hit and goes down, like last time. This third time, Rua will be dominated just like the last time, only this time, he will not get that lucky punch in.
As for Evans; what a joke!
I can’t wait to see BJ Penn take his belt back. He is one champion who has lost his belt that can get it back and not go down like most other ex-champs. No, Penn is more like GSP when it comes to learning lessons and keeping what he gets back from the one who took it from him. Yes, Edgar will give this belt right back to Penn.
I gotta disagree with you on this one Fingers..
Evans Beat 2 of the top guys in his road back to the title.!! Thiago and Rampage.. The Rampage fight being for the title shot making Rashad the Number #1 contender soooooo he earned that spot..
Rua had surgery on the Knee so I wannna see how he comes back after that and regroups in fighting form.. He is a fantastic fighter and I hate he keeps getting Injuried but I believe Evans will give him a run for his money after what he learned against Machida..
That he is not a Boxer or Great Standup fighter, Now he will stick with his roots and wrestle.
Rashad got lucky with Thiago’s back and still about got KO’d in the last round. As for Rua Machida III its just unnecessary Machida got dominated for 5 rounds the first fight and then KOd the 2nd time.
Then Thiago with his “unlucky BACK” shouldnt have gotten in the cage!!! The thing about injuries is if you go ahead and fight with them, then there is no excuse!!! Because if you win with an injury then what???? Sooooo Rashad didn’t get lucky,,,, fighting some one with you game plan and wearing them down to the point of exhaustion is not LUCK… Wrestlers implement wrestling into the fight to GRIND out their opponents and even if they land a hard shot or do well in the fight itself by the end of the fight they are to weak and tired to finish the fight.. Case in point Rashad vs Thiago – Rashad – Rampage Rashad vs dang near everyone he has fought etc.etc.
Chael vs. Anderson=more ppv buys and $$$ than Belfort would bring. Vitor is an awesome fighter (not taking anything away from his skill set) anderson/belfort won’t draw as much $$$ for the UFC as a rematch. Let’s face it, at the end of the day the UFC is a for profit business and what better way to put chips in the bank than reschedule a rematch (while the press is still hot) between Anderson/Sonnen.
Change of “screen name” will send your comment into moderation, please keep to one “screen name” so this doesn’t continue ~ FR702
i think rashad will beat rua easily.
machida k.o. s rampage.then rashad again champ again next year
Short but fast Rashad will have to get Rua to the cage and the ground and wear him down. KO highly coming from Rashad. He will follow a similar plan as the forrest fight unlikely. And even to get close to Rua he has to get past devastating kicks, knees, and diverse hand strikes. Also Rua sometimes throws short combos but othertimes throws a barrage while moving forward at a fast speed, and the strikes come from all over. If Shogun’s knees are good it’s a tough night 4 Rashad.
Instant rematches need to stop.
Obviously sonnen deserves a rematch are you kidding me?
Sonnen dominated the fight for 23 minutes & he lost in the last 2 minutes of the 5th and last round.
Was it a lucky submission though? No it wasn’t.
Sonnen was tired in the end of the fight & got sloppy, silva acted on his arm being open for a triangle. Silva good for you. You defeated the 1 person that gave you the run for your belt.
Sonnen Silva II would be a great fight for the Ufc & for the fans.
It was an entertaining fight & the closest fight ever.
Sonnen could have won but he got sloppy, he should work on that. Silva needs to work on takedown defence. I personally would love to see what happens in sonnen silva II. Either it’d be more intense or silva just has a big knock out like on Vitor.
