World Extreme Cagefighting will make its Phoenix debut when it hosts WEC 53 on December 16 at the Jobing.com Arena in nearby Glendale, Arizona.
The event was announced during Wednesday’s WEC 50 broadcast on Versus after Phoenix beat out Milwaukee and Nashville in Amp Energy’s “Hometown Takedown” contest, which allowed fans to vote on the location for the Dec. event.
WEC lightweight champ Ben Henderson, who trains out of Arizona, is expected to return on the WEC 53 fight card and will likely face top contender Anthony Pettis, who submitted Shane Roller in the final seconds of the WEC 50 co-main event on Wednesday.

Ben should be fighting Varner if and when Varner beats Cerrone. Varner got hosed against Kamal and he was rusty during the Hendo fight and still won the first 2 rounds. Pettis is nice but shouldn’t he fight one of the tougher guys first? Cerrone or Kamal?? Let’s not forget also that Varner is FROM Phoenix and should be fighting for a title in his hometown.
Except he isn’t coming off a win and the WEC isn’t Strikeforce…
Whether he got hosed, rusty or whatever you want to call it, he lost. Therefore he shouldn’t be fighting anyone for the title. But he should be on the card for sure being in his hometown.
it was technically a draw
I’d agree with that; however, if Varner beats Cerrone, then maybe
he could get a title shot in Glendale if he is able to fight.
Thanks Chrisl, good point! a draw doesn’t get you a title shot
Regardless who wins, Pettis should be next.. not Cerrone or Varner… new fights need to happen… not rematches… Cerrone/Henderson just happened… and Varner and Henderson just happened… give them time and new opponents… I feel the same way about Anderson Silva… giving him Belfort now not Chael again… and I wish the UFC would have gave Edgar someone diff than Penn right away… but hey, to each their own..
