Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Sidelined Four Months for Surgery

Posted by on Aug 16, 2010 at 4:00 pm ET8 Comments

UFC heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will undergo surgery to repair injuries to his hips and knee, which forced him to withdraw from a UFC 119 rematch with Frank Mir, and expects to resume training in around four months.

“I hurt my hips training and I’ll have to go on surgery,” Nogueira told Tatame. “I’m only depending on a few exams, but I think it’ll be done by the weekend. The surgery will be on both sides of my hips, and I’ll operate my knee too. If everything goes alright I’ll be back on training in four months.”

Mir will now face veteran Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic in the main event of the UFC 119 fight card.

    Wow.
    Hips and a knee.
Pretty harsh evidence of dbiz’s PRIDE syndrome at work, or just one of those things?
Either way I wish BigNog a speedy recovery and return to training as soon as medically possible…

Jdubbs the pride fighter fought in much harder fights than most ufc fighters IMO i think what jcohl is talking about.

      • Bingo.

All those fights with no real athletic commission to regulate and ensure fighter health takes its toll on the human body. No one is immune, and the human body can only take so much before you are done.

We’re seeing it in a lot of the older Pride fighters. And I get slammed every time I start up the list, but Mr. Peepers has always been on it. Ultimately, I believe Wanderlei is too, right there with Hendo, Rampage, and a slew of the MMA pioneers. Even to a lesser extent a guy like Jeremy Horn.

Mr. Peepers’ body is just giving out after the punishment it has taken over the past 10 years or so.

    What is PRIDE Syndrome?

Bad hips and knees, ow once those start going it can be the beginning of the end. I wish all the best and a speedy recovery.
Ouch, and he is doing the knee surgury himself, that has got to be hard, talk about a talented guy. JK.

How exactly do you hurt BOTH of your hips training? I wouldn’t be surprised if the knee was an older, nagging injury he’s getting done while he’s there…but BOTH hips???

  • vjpenn says:

Well, sadly, if this is the beginning of the end of BigNog’s career, at least he has a bright future as the silent-yet-deadly bad guy henchman in uber-action movies.

  • Avatar of fr702 says:

He was ran over by a Big Rig when he was 9, his pelvic region was damaged along with a lung, not saying that the man hasn’t put a beating on his body but its not like his hips were ever “100%” or anything.
