Rising middleweight Alan Belcher says he isn’t thinking about fighting as he focuses on recovering from a detached retina, which forced him out of the UFC Fight Night 22 main event against fellow contender Demian Maia and put the 26-year-old’s career in jeopardy.
“Worst case is I don’t get any better than this and then I’m only working with one eye and I probably don’t want to risk fighting again with only one eye, cause if I lose that one, I’m going to be blind,” Belcher told Purefight on Monday (video below). “I’m not really thinking about fighting right now. I’m going to wait a couple months and see where I’m at. It’s disappointing cause I was on a roll and getting really close to a title (shot).”
Belcher (16-6) has won four of his last five fights, losing only a controversial split decision to Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100 last July before rebounding with wins over Wilson Gouveia in December and Patrick Cote in May.
