UFC 117 PLAY-BY-PLAY

JUNIOR DOS SANTOS VS. ROY NELSON

Round 1 – Nelson and dos Santos touch gloves to start the UFC 117 main card. Nelson keeps his hands high as dos Santos comes out swinging, but he misses with an early uppercut. Nelson tries for a takedown, but dos Santos stays on his feet and Nelson presses him in the clinch. Nelson walks dos Santos across the cage, but he can’t get him to the ground yet. Dos Santos fires a knee as they separate the clinch. Dos Santos hurts Nelson with an uppercut and follows it up with another then a flurry of punches, but Nelson survives. Dos Santos fires off more punches, then drops Nelson with an uppercut and unloads another flurry of punches and knees. Nelson moves off the cage but Dos Santos continues to connect with punches before Nelson finally connects with some strong punches of his own. Nelson blocks a lot of the damages by keeping his hands high, then connects again before Dos Santos blasts him with more punches in the final seconds. Round 2 – After touching gloves, dos Santos misses with a knee, but connects with a right as Nelson tries for a takedown. Dos Santos mixes in body shots as he continues to connect with punches, but he starts to slow and Nelson shots for a takedown but it’s stopped again. After fighting for position in the clinch, Nelson tries to setup a takedown but it’s stuffed again. Dos Santos looks to take the fight to the ground, but Nelson sprawls away. Nelson’s high hands block most of the punches, but dos Santos sneaks a few through and stuns Nelson again the final minute. Dos Santos is tired, but finishes the round with more punches. Round 3 – Nelson comes out firing punches to start the third, but dos Santos takes over with powerful punches against the cage. Dos Santos just misses with an uppercut, then works the body again. Dos Santos scores a takedown as Nelson stalks forward, but they quickly stand. Nelson misses again with the overhand right as dos Santos continues to fire a mix of punches. MATT HUGHES VS. RICARDO ALMEIDA

Round 1 – Almeida and Hughes touch gloves then circle quickly looking for openings, but neither connects with much early. Hughes starts to mix in kicks and tries to close the distance, but Almeida connects with punches. Almeida fires an inside leg kick and follows it up with a punch before Hughes counters. Hughes gets into the clinch, but Almeida unloads a quick combo. Hughes drops Almeida with a left hook, then chokes the black belt Almeida out cold with an arm triangle choke.

CLAY GUIDA VS. RAFAEL DOS ANJOS

Round 1 – Dos Anjos takes the center of the Octagon and connects with a quick combo early. Dos Anjos misses with a head kick, but Guida’s connects. Powerful inside leg kick by dos Anjos, but he eats some punches. More leg kicks by dos Anjos, who then looks for a takedown, but Guida reverses and presses dos Anjos in the clinch. Guida continues to fight for the takedown, but dos Anjos stays on his feet and throws some punches to the body. Dos Santos connects with a knee as they separate, but misses with a combo. Dos Anjos with another leg kick followed by a left, but his takedown is stuffed. Dos Anjos lands a head kick and a pair of punches, then Guida counters before dos Anjos earns a late takedown. Guida gets back to his feet in the final seconds, but dos Anjos connects again. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round for dos Anjos 10-9.

Round 2 – Guida avoids dos Anjos’ head kicks to begin the second, then gets a boost from the crowd as he connect with a counter. Dos Anjos shoots again and they clinch briefly before returning to the center of the cage and trading punches. Guida is taking less damage and connecting more midway through the second, but dos Anjos continues to fire kicks. Guida ducks a combo and gets a takedown, but dos Anjos looks to setup a submission. Guida gets to half guard and grinds away with ground and pound. Dos Anjos looks for an omoplata as Guida keeps on the pressure with strong ground and pound to close out the frame. Round 3 – Guida moves forward with punches, but eats a counter from dos Santos. Guida and dos Santos trade shots against the fence, then Guida goes for a takedown and slams dos Anjos to the canvas. Guida goes to work from side control and drops knees to the body. Guida connects with some ground and pound then presses dos Anjos’ head against the fence and he taps from a broken jaw suffered in the opening round.

Round 1 – Fitch and Alves touch gloves and Alves quickly connects with punches. After circling, Fitch throws a head kick, but Alves counters with punches. Fitch scores a takedown and immediately takes Alves back. Fitch tries to setup a rear naked choke, but Alves briefly returns to his feet before Fitch drags him back down. Alves stands again, but Fitch slams him back down and is into half guard. Alves scrambles to his feet, then reverses into Fitch’s guard. Alves struggles to get anything going on the ground and lets Fitch stand. Alves moves forward with punches, but Fitch connects with some crisp combos. Fitch looks for another takedown, but Alves shrugs this one off. Fitch moves into the clinch and gets Alves down again in the final seconds. MMAFrenzy.com scores the round for Fitch 10-9.

Round 2 – Fitch starts the second with a kick, then Alves moves forward with punches. Fitch scores another takedown and Alves grabs the neck, but lets it go. Silva gets Sonnen down, but they’re quickly back on their feet and Sonen connects again before getting Silva down and working ground and pound from half guard. Sonnen presses Silva against the fence and tees off with punches, then takes his back and connects with more. Silva rolls back to half guard. Round 2 – Silva connects with a strong leg kick to start the second, but Sonnen quickly takes him down again. Sonnen passes to half guard, but Silva connects with some elbows from the bottom. Sonnen throws some short punches, then claps Silva’s ears and slams his head into the ground. Silva gets back to guard as Sonnen postures up and connects with punches. Silva tries to find and opening, but struggles to get control and Sonnen continues to ground and pound. Silva finally limits the damage and threatens with an armbar, but Sonnen gets free again and drops elbows. Silva looks for a triangle, but Sonnen escapes and continues to attack. Sonnen gets Silva down again and drops knees to the body then tees of with a flurry of punches to the head, but there’s little power behind them. Silva rolls into guard and finally gets Sonnen under control. Sonnen unleashes a burst of ground and pound, but Silva keeps him close to limit the damage. Sonnen throws punches to the body, then Silva tries to punch from the bottom but struggles just to keep Sonnen under control. Round 4 – Silva knocks Sonnen down in the opening second of the fourth. Sonnen gets back to his feet, but Silva rocks him again with a head kick and gets on top on the ground. Silva can’t capitalize and Sonnen reverses into his guard. Sonnen grinds away with more ground and pound as Silva can’t escape from his back. Chael Sonnen postures up and drop punches. Round 5 – Silva and Sonnen circle to begin the final round, then Sonnen knocks Silva down with a punch. Sonnen scrambles down and tries to lock up an arm choke, but Silva escapes to guard. Sonnen grinds on Silva with hammerfists then gets free for more powerful ground and pound. Sonnen locks on a triangle choke and Sonnen is unable to escape, ultimately tapping to allow Silva to amazingly remain the UFC middleweight champion.
