While the winner of UFC 117’s Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos bout is guaranteed a title shot against the winner of the UFC 121 headliner between current champ Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez, the loser of Saturday’s matchup could face recent challenger Shane Carwin in their next fight, according to UFC UK President Marshall Zelaznik:
“Shane Carwin is a man people would love to have a win over on their record. His performance against Brock Lesnar was so good that he only sits one or two fights away from a return to a title shot.
Junior Dos Santos and Roy Nelson are the two names that, come hell or high water, Shane is going to have to face.
Joe [Silva] has a tendency to match fighters who are coming off losses in order to give them their chance to turn things around. So how the Nelson v Dos Santos fight plays out may have a bearing on Shane Carwin.”
The interim title-holder Carwin (12-1) nearly finished Lesnar with ground and pound in the opening round of the UFC 116 main event on July 3, but Lesnar recovered to retain the title with a second-round submission win.
The Ultimate Fighter 10 winner Nelson (15-4) is looking for his third-straight win following back-to-back victories over Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve, while Dos Santos (11-1) has scored five-straight UFC wins, including a first-round TKO of Gabriel Gonzaga in March.
