Shogun Recovering Faster Than Expected, February UFC Return Possible

Posted by on Jul 26, 2010 at 10:30 am ET26 Comments

Mauricio Shogun RuaUFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is recovering faster than expected from recent knee surgery and could meet top contender and former title-holder Rashad Evans at the UFC’s Super Bowl weekend event in February after originally being targeted for a March return.

“Off the top of my head, I think of the Superbowl card in February, but this is something that could change depending on his recovery schedule and the UFC’s business schedule,” Rua’s manager, Eduardo Alonso, recently told Sherdog. “But the way things are going right now, I can tell you that he’ll be ready sooner than expected.”

Rua (19-4) scored a first-round knockout of title-holder Lyoto Machida in May to avenge a controversial October decision loss, but suffered a torn ACL in the bout, postponing a matchup with Evans, who earned a title shot with a May win over rival Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

Thats good to hear. see shogun destroy rashad then watch the jags win the superbowl the next day!! haha ya i know jags prob wont be in superbowl ;)

i have always lived in md, but my teams are the jags [afc] and the panthers[nfc]. i dont understand what the jags are doing they could of filled half their seats by getting tebow alone! sadly i think that the jags have a slimmer chance then sf of being around in 5 years. that was serious about the jags leaving, but just joking about sf. i like sf and think that they are doing good cards and exciting fights and have the right backing. just thinks everyone forgets that it takes time to grow. it wasnt to long ago that the ufc was having people fight for titles after losses and hinging everything on hughes, ace, randy and chuck.

farve comes back and they are the favs in my book. farve vs peyton in his final game.

let’s stay on topic… though I will say that as a jags fan I was glad we didn’t draft Tebow. People would want too much too soon from him Jacksonville and even he knows he is a project. He landed in the best place for him. Getting Tebow would’ve just been a short-term fix for ticket sales. Nothing permanent.

      • glassman6 says:

yes thats why you pick him up, you got a set playbook for him. goalines, short yardage, options and running plays. you work on him and let him fill some seats!! get people paying and work on your team as a whole. they need short term and long term. tebow has a bad style ,but he is already better then david g. and a born winner. and nobody cares about football like him. then you go out and get a team that always makes the playoffs. im sorry but picking a def. lineman with the 11th pick and taking someone that most teams had going middle to late second???? tebow also has the number1 bought jersey since he was drafted. and thats with some of the biggest stars changing teams and jerseys.

you do know the same people who worked with brady are now in denver. tebow star rising is just a matter of if orten is really decent or if he will fail now that teams have video and not having marshall will hurt orten more then tebow!!! sorry done with the off topic stuff.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH the jags win lol keep dreaming bud

  • Corey says:

Nah this is the Charger’s Season! Anyways very good to gear that Shogun will be back sooner. Hopefully this will be his last knee surgery and he can finally put this issue behind him.

  • Brent says:

Just hope he gets back in shape after this knee injury or he is going to be in for a long night with Rashad

  • Avatar of jcohl jcohl says:

Shogun’s knee/s are going to be tested both by his opponents and by himself the first time he rams one of them into an opponent’s grill…

  • Avatar of KSEcALAMITY KSEcALAMITY says:

come on we all know it is the Boys year yeah the cowboys, and that is awseome to hear about shogun can’t wait to see this fight

  • nev-o says:

shogun dominating and im willing to bet the jets and the vikings.

  • muaythai4life says:

I hope that Shogun has gotten his bad knees taken care of. It’ll be bad for him in the long run if he needs another surgery. What has been impressive however is how loose he has remained with the multiple surgeries he has already had. A lot of fighters end up wearing knee braces indefinately after a single surgery – let’s hope he’s good after this one anyhow.

    • Avatar of jazz jazz says:

I hope shogun heals well and comes back ready. It would be a shame if the long layoff/surgery have an effect on him to the point where “sugar” wins the title. Not saying “sugar” can’t win, just saying that it doesn’t hurt his chances of winning facing what will likely be a shogun that’s less than 100%. Hua?

  • Avatar of jcohl jcohl says:

Gee, you think posters over on throwball sites are kicking around Shogun Rua’s return and subsequent next title defense?
    ;)

  • Avatar of Chris Leslie Chris Leslie says:

I always get hesistant when I hear about a guy with a knee injury getting better “faster than expected” since it usually means they’re just pushing themselves to get back quicker rather than being ready to go on. Believe me there’s a big difference.

    • glassman6 says:

i agree, and i think that rashad is going to stand as little as possible. and if rua isnt as fast as possible he will lose. i fractured my knee cap and it took me a couple years to be right. wrestling is bad for the knees, longer the fight goes the better for evans. does this mean that machida- evans 2 is not happening? i wouldnt mind seeing that fight first. not like the first one was boring. im sorry but i think beating machida is alot different then someone machida knocked out [thiago] or a rusty rampage. but either fight is a great headliner or co headliner imo.

    • jiujitsuMAN says:

its hard to say though… if he is taking care and allowing healing to be done along with proper rehab rather than pushing himself he could be healing faster…

hes had enough surgeries to know what to do and what not to do… i’d like to beleive hes doing what is right and hes taking it very serious because he is now the champ and needs to focus on being as healthy and strong as possible

      • glassman6 says:

you would think so, but then you have to think about that he had to think his ufc debut would be important and it didnt look like he was as healthy and strong as possible.

    • Avatar of jcohl jcohl says:

So how far into the fight will Evans test Rua’s knee?
      I’m guessing about the 40 second mark…

  • SAmuay says:

if rashad makes it that far!

  • nev-o says:

haha nice statement SAmuay :). G and P along with some G and P. Shogun mauled the man who Mauled Rashad…i like them both but Thiago silva and rampage have both put him in hot water…with SHOGUN he is going to be boiling :)

    • skdrcr says:

Shogun did maul the guy who mauled Rashad but guess what, that
doesn’t mean anything. They have two completely defferent styles.
Rashad has gone back to what got him in the ufc in the first place,
his wrestling defense. He will not try to stand with Shogun. He’s
gonna wear him down and utilize his wrestling to get the belt back
from Shogun. Just wait and see. Shogun’s wresting defense isn’t
good enough to keep the fight standing.

      • skdrcr says:

I meant to say Rashad’s wrestling and Octogan control, not
        his wrestling defense :P

      • Avatar of Chris Leslie Chris Leslie says:

the only problem with Rashad’s wrestling is that in his last few fights it’s caused him to wear out in the third and expose himself to KO strikes and this is a five round fight.

    • glassman6 says:

that doesnt always add up buddy!!! are you forgeting rashad killed forrest and forrest subd shogun and probably had the dec.
