Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez Could Headline September’s UFC 119 in Indianapolis
With his win over interim champ Shane Carwin in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 116, undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar booked a matchup with top contender Cain Velasquez, a fight which, health permitting, could headline UFC 119 on September 25 in Indianapolis, according to the Dayton Daily News.
Lesnar (5-1) narrowly survived a ground and pound attack in the opening round to submit an exhausted Carwin with an arm triangle choke in the second round of the UFC 116 headliner.
While Lesnar emerged with cuts and bruises from his fourth-straight win, he made no mention of serious injuries following the victory and will discuss facing Velasquez at UFC 119 with UFC officials this week.
Velasquez (8-0) improved to 8-0 in February with a first-round TKO of former heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
A middleweight bout between CB Dollaway and Joe Doerksen was recently added to UFC 119, which has yet to be officially announced, while a matchup between light heavyweights Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is in doubt for the card.

Sounds good to me. Lets keep this thing on the fast track.
Ya Brock needs to keep things rolling, beating Carwin after a year layoff and serious ilness was impressive, to beat a cardio machine like velasquez will take some momentum.
i think velasquez will destroy him
Cain Velasquez will not beat Brock Lesnar… Brock is gonna SMASH HIS FACE until it resembles something like ground beef!! Division 1 NCAA wrestler or not Cain cannot and will not defend Brock’s takedowns and we all know what will happen when Brock is on top of Cain!
BROCK IS AN OVERCOOKED PIECE OF STEAK…TOOO TOUGH!! Not to mention the fact that he’s proven hae has a chin n a half!! He clearly can’t be K.O.’d. If Shane couldn’t K.O. him, Cain won’t either!
If Cain can push the pace and make good transitions between striking and take downs then he’s got a good shot. I’ve said this a hundred times on numerous threads but anybody facing Brock needs to take a page from Randy Couture and work specifically on getting out from under him. Randy devoted almost his entire camp to working off his back underneath big men and if you noticed in their fight, every time Brock gained position on Randy, he got right back up and delivered shots.
My thoughts and opinions on Brock have widened alot and I respect him more now after the Carwin fight but his major threat still is his ability to quickly take you down and stay on top and pound (or surprisingly submit) his way to victory. Take that away from him and you have more than a good chance of beating him.
good comment!
I would have to agree with you jason. but the only problem is i dont even know if he can hurt brock. If Carwin didnt take anything out of him with that pounding then i dont know who can.
Ohhh yeahhh, im going for sure now. Just get a couple more quality fights on this card and ill make the lowly trip over to indiana from Chicago.
“Cain Valazques will destroy him”…thats funny I heard the same thing when it was announced that he was gonna fight Carwin…Maybe Brock deserves just a little respect from a fight standpoint.
Content removed, be nice.

Actually to be honest, Shane Carwin did pretty much destroy him right up until he gassed himself out and was easily submitted. It was a dominant 10-8 round with Brock showing inferior stand-up, and whether he wants to admit it or not, the inability to get up off his back from a brutal ground and pound.
Gotta give credit though where it’s due and Brock did take the pounding like a man, and luckily for him the fight wasn’t stopped. If it were anyone else, it likely would have been imho.
Brock still has many holes and plenty of flaws in his game, but his sheer size, strength and cardio are getting him victories. He also exposed Shane Carwin to be a pretty one dimensional fighter with questionable cardio. I for one think Cain is a serious threat to beat the champ and the only major concern is his size, which is becoming quite evident to be a serious factor in this division.
Carwin isn’t entirely one dimensional. He did sprawl Lesnar out on the initial takedown in the first. No one else has managed to do that.
Still have a smile from ear to ear. Hope it happened this soon so I can keep this smile. The win was amazing I’m looking beyond Cain. Jds and big country. Jds and Brock looks amazing. Good fights coming up in ufc keep it up Dana.
Lol I dunno about destroying him or hurting him, but you do get points for hitting people. Brocks stand-up isn’t great…yet. So again if he can make those transitions he’s got a shot.
There’s gonna be no time for transitions. Brock will probably shoot right away to avoid another damaging 1st rd against yet another powerful striker with K.O. power. Trust me he’s learned his lesson from Shane and he knows he’s got light years ahead to go before he catches up with someone like Cain in the striking dept.
He will stick to his Wrestling base and outclass Cain through sheer size and strength. And even though Carwin lost the fight I think he still managed to teach Brock a valuable lesson about underestimating his opponents skills especially in the striking dept. Not to mention the fact that Brock is so quick and agile, he really does move like a WW.
i want brock 2 win but i think cain will get him cuz hes cardio never
ends cain wont stop until the fight is over
This would be a great fight to increase coverage through the middle part of the country. Already a pretty good card being pulled together…only question is it too fast on the heels of the Carwin fight for Brock to recover and start a new round of training.
cain have no chance against brock.. stop wishful thinking
@ reinier I would like for you to try to explain how Cain doesnt have a chance. Cain’s hands and take down offense look much better than Brocks(Kongo,B Rothwell). His cardio and stand up are only getting better. Cain has alot of momentum from his previous fights. If you ask me i’d say Velasquez will beat Brock. I guess we will find out in September.
If you keep moving and defending and pushing away there us NO reason to stop the fight. Yall just use to seeing bad calls and pre-mature stops. So that’s what the thanks is for and behalf of fans who like to see a fight.
That would be awesome if they put Brock and Cain on that card. I’m from Indiana and live only an hour away from Indy, so i’m definitely going. Rampage vs Lil Nog, Forrest or Machida and Brock vs Cain for the HW title, that would be a great event. I would kind of like see them put Chris Lytle on that card as well… Make it happen, Dana.
We shouldn’t get too excited just yet for this fight [at 119] until the NSAC releases their suspensions…
Yeah, I’m hoping Brock and Chris Lytle don’t get any medical suspensions.
Both will have suspensions (Brock for the facial lacerations and bruises) and Lytle will likely have some form of suspension because the fight lasted a little longer than a round. Lytle would be much more likely than Lesnar, but we shall see what happens.
I am also from Indiana about 40 min away….i hope cain and brock fight that night i would love to see that live at conseco…..
Cain would have a very hard time beating brock. Brock is bigger and alot stronger. Carwin is for real. Im putting him as number 2 heavyweight in the world. The guy has outstanding stand up. Brock will beat cain then JDS then its time for lesnar carwin 2 because a rematch should be on deck as long as carwin beats somebody good by then. I also do not see brock getting beat like that in a rematch. I think brock will get the take down and in the heavyweight division. Lesnar ground in pound if prob. the best. Cain is very good. But hes being thrown into the fire to fast. After he loses against Brock i would love Cain vs. Carwin. Cain is a great fighter, but brock is a better wrestler. cain doesnt hit as hard as carwin and brock is to big. Excited though, i live in indy ill be there!!!
I don’t think cain’s cardio is gonna be enough to overtake lesnar’s sheer strength. He’s gonna need the perfect gameplan to beat him and it’s gonna have to be standing with him because brock has the better ground game period.
Quick analysis Lesnar vs Velasquez, just to illustrate the points to everyone:
- Wrestling / CV is good, Lesnar is better
- stand-up / CV is more technical and polished, Lesnar has greater reach
- speed / probably even
- Octagon control / roughly even, although Lesnar improved dramatically each time out, and CV improved incrementally.
- aggression / do we even need to ask?
- athleticism / Lesnar [especially for his size]
- strength / Lesnar by a mile
- size / Lesnar by a lightyear
- submissions / I would say CV here, but Lesnar just submitted the last BJJ purplebelt he faced in Carwin, plus Lesnar trains with one of the very best catch-wrestlers in the world, and is dedicated to mastering catch.
By the time the Lesnar-Velasquez fight goes off, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lesnar submit CV, assuming the ref doesn’t stop the fight due to CV getting silverbacked.
Not sure how much of this is disputable or debatable, so assuming all things remain equal this should be an easier win for Lesnar than Carwin was.
Look for “Vanilla Gorilla Pride” to triumph over “Brown Pride” in about 7-8 minutes…
