Couture is the freakin man I can’t wait for this fight and the boxing vs mma score gets set even at (atleast I’m pretty sure) at 1-1 and we can forget about mercer knockin off big tims head in less then 10 seconds….despite how funny it was to see a 300 plus pound timmy lose like that…but hey atleast we have a 1 up on worlds strongest man lol
couture is the best he has ever been. The problem that he had in past with heavyweights was that his opponents were way heavier and way younger. With toney being close in age, similar in age, and no mma experience, couture should have no problem.
I consider Couture to be “in the mix” so to speak. So IF Toney were to knockout Couture (which wouldn’t be a surprise given his background) where does that put him in the division and who would he fight next?
And will the UFC instantly cut Toney if he loses to prove a point?
I think this fight is fairly pointless, and wastes time that the Natural at his age doesn’t have to waste.
Somehow in the space of something like 48 hours Couture went from being asked to step in by the 205 titleholder Rua to being saddled with cleaning up Dana White’s latest mess.
Truthfully given the disparity in Couture’s and Toney’s legacy to their respective sports, this match-up more closely resembles the UFC version of the Discovery Channel program “Dirty Jobs” than a legit MMA fight.
If Couture loses the fight the fans lose as well, because then Dana is somehow obligated to do something else with James Toney, as opposed to [figuratively] throwing him out into the gutter where he belongs.
If Couture wins, all he’s done is beaten an old washed-up competitor from an inferior combat sport and not advanced in the 205 mix.
As a longtime Couturian, I have little interest in seeing Couture step in with people like Toney, who can barely pronounce the word sportsmanship, as opposed to displaying any.
And if you think I’m being too harsh on Toney, just trying checking out some of the statements he’s made regarding MMA and Randy Couture.
I would much rather have seen the Natural either welcome Frank Mir to the 205 weightclass, determine Rich Franklin’s true 205 standing, or possibly hand Tito Ortiz another well-deserved Octagonal spanking.
Anything would be better than this sideshow Dana has planned for his hometown.
Unless some unknown accommodation has been reached, I have to question Couture’s judgement in agreeing to fight someone like Toney.
If the Natural wanted to face a boxer, thats one thing.
Facing someone who handles himself the way Toney does is another, and cheapens the sport.
Dana White is really to blame here, but Couture didn’t make matters any better by agreeing to the fight.
I guess the deal here is that Couture is now beyond conventionalities like rankings. He simply fights to fight, in mostly the UFC “masters” division, and to be well-compensated for his efforts.
Hopefully Couture will be taking home close to seven figures from 118 when its all said and done, and hopefully he gets past Toney’s striking quickly enough so that I can enjoy a “snap” before a “tap”…
