The Ultimate Fighter 6: Episode 7 Recap
Caution: This post contains spoilers from the sixth episode of The Ultimate Fighter 6: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra
With last weeks win Team Serra won the majority of the opening round bouts and now controls the next round though two opening round fights remain. The wins by the opposition have now visibly frustrated Hughes though he continues on the path we’ve seen much of this season: tough practices.
This week’s contest is Team Hughes’ Jared “J Rock” Rollins versus Team Serra’s George Sotiropoulos. After a brief scare that Rollins may have to back out of the fight due to a rib injury we proceed to the weigh-ins. Both fighters make weight with Sotiropolous weighing in several pounds lighter than Rollins. After a very tense stare down in which neither fighter wanted the other to have their way they returned to the house in advance of their fight the next day.
After an even start to the fight momentum quickly swung to Sotiropoulos who used effective strikes throughout the beginning of the opening frame to wear down his opponent. With more than a minute remaining in round one Sotiropoulos connected with a hard uppercut that send Rollins to the ground. The member of Team Serra quickly pounced and landed several unanswered shots to the downed Rollins before the referee called a stop to the fight.

George seems like he’s on a mission. He looked good ou there, too. Granted, I expected a little more out of J-rock, but George listened and just picked him away til he TKOed him. I’ve seen Tommy Speer fight in WEC, but never Jon Kopppenhaver, anyone know about him other than what’s been on the show?
matt hughes and his team are getting so badly beaten!!!! i think hughes ego tends to get in the way a bit and serra is exactly the opposite. the best fighters arnt always the best coaches.
Matt Hughes needs to stop taking the comp personal. Serra has such a hard on for Hughes, it makes me sick. But they will handle it in the ring. J-Rock needs to learn to keep his hands up and tight, not open and spread apart if he wants to do stand up. He has a lot of passion, but get some boxing lessons.
Did you see J-Rocks’s stance. It looked like Chuck Liddell and that open stance that Chuck has. He just left himself open until George was confident enough to get closer.
George looks like the one to beat. He does have weaknesses too he almost buckled after that first leg kick. I’m not familiar with the two remaining fighters, but knowing that Jon Koppenhaver is a last minute replacement I think he will lose next week. I think it’s George vs Tommy Speer in the final. I actually like the way George stood his ground and said, “I’m not your Mama”. I agree with George it’s not his responsibility to wake them. Hughes has paid the price in the last two fights for over training his guys. They both received injuries that surely affected their fights. Serra is really setting himself for an embarrassing defeat with all that trash talking. He puts all the pressure on himself to live up to the talk. If Hughes loses then he will have lost to the champion. There is no shame in that. I am getting the feeling that Hughes will destroy him. I don’t know another champion who acts as classless as Serra has. By constantly calling Hughes a dick he has turned into the very thing he has called Hughes, a dick. I don’t understand Dana White not telling Serra to stop with the vulgar name calling. I’m sure it is not how he would like his champion to speak about someone who has done so much for the UFC.
One of the basic principals of martial arts is to respect your opponent. Matt Serra has no respect for Matt Hughes, a guy he has never fought. I believe he will have new respect once they fight.
I think Serra is just as surprised as we all are that he has won 6 of 7 fights. Mac Danzig is the guy to beat. Could be him and George
that sucks rollins lost i wnated him 2 win 4 team hughes but george is one bad dude well my pick is still in which is
tommy speer he looks like a monster and i think he beats war machine because i remeber in the preview of the season warmachine and jared rollins where fighting in a room but will find out
I thought (maybe that was my mistake,THINKING!) that Hughes and Serra fought before? Come to think of it, I think I am thinking of Sherk vs Hughes. I really like Mac Danzig. Aside from his little tantrum he threw when his team mate from home lost, I think he shows the best attitude there. He even wonders why he is there with all of the “amature” fighters, but he doesn’t shove it in their faces. He helps each and every one of them. Especially emotionally. I don’t think it is helping Hughes though. If Mac wasn’t there telling the fighters they did what they could after a loss, then Hughes might break the fighters. I think Danzig could almost be a coach. He definately has the respect of the other fighters, and I hope he wins the whole shabang. I think it would be hilarious if he fought Richie Hightower in the Quarter finals. For some reason he brings out the hate in me, and I want someone to thrash his ass. I think Mac wants to anyways.
Yeah, I agree. If Mac wasn’t there Hughes’ team would have probably quit or asked to be on team Serra by now. He’s holding the team together more than Hughes is. Also, he’s one of Hughes’ two fighters still in this thing. But I’m sure someone will get injured, so when that happens, who do you think they’ll let fight again? Dan?
Personally I think it should not be the two fighters with teams against each other. Both coaches have great resources for all of the fighters. I would love to see the format like this.
The two coaches each pic the fightes. Picking great fights.
Second, all the players get to be coached by both coaches in two different sessions.
Thirdly, this would enhance the fights and lower the B.S between the coaches.
Serra has shown all my friends why we can not stand that whining girl.
A couple of the comments about Serra’s not showing respect towards Hughes are understandable, but only if you haven’t seen all of the segments on Hughes. Matt Hughes is One Bad Dude and probably anyone he fights he wins 8 of 10, but he started the trash talking with Serra jus like he did with George St. Pierre. He likes to rip on guys and with little smart azz remarks that you would expect from a punk. You wouldn’t catch Capt America talking smack like that. Both Hughes and Serra need to bite their lip and show some maturity and save it for the cage. Wallman- out
I just went over to UFC.com and read both Serra’s and Hughes’ blogs they wrote after last weeks episode. I think the show is making Hughes look like a dick again, but I think he and Serra may both be genuine GOOD DUDES. I think that Serra is definately the better coach in THAT FORMAT, but Hughes’ methods may be better for long term trainning goals. Hughes mentioned (like many of us here) how Danzig is being a GREAT teamate at the house, and how he was glad that he was conferting the team after Hughes’ tiraides.
I cant wait to see Hughes ground n pound him though
