Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Agreed for September

Former light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and rising contender Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will look to move closer to a 205-pound title shot when they likely square off at September’s UFC 119 in Indianapolis.

According to Tatame, the matchup has been verbally agreed upon for September but is not yet officially signed.

Following back-to-back wins over Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine, Jackson (30-8) returned from a 15-month layoff with a unanimous decision loss to fellow contender Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 114.

Nogueira (19-3) knocked out Luiz Cane in the opening round of his UFC debut in November, then scored a controversial split decision over late-replacement Jason Brilz at UFC 114 in May for his seventh-straight win.

UFC 119 is also rumored to include Melvin Guillard vs. Jeremy Stephens and Joey Beltran vs. Matt Mitrione.

Love this… always amazed this match-up never happened in PRIDE

  • lex415 says:

    So pumped for this one!

Now that is fight to watch hope rampage has kept his weight down following the Rashad fight, cage rust wont be an issue for this fight ether.

  • JZ says:

Me too… I’m from Indiana and live only an hour away from Indy, so I’m definitely going. I Can’t wait. I’ll be rooting for Rampage in this one. It’s gonna be a sick fight.

Great matchmaking by Joe Silva, or maybe Dana White.
I’m sure this fight will be good stuff, but it does make me wonder “what about Forrest Griffin?”
    Griffin-Ortiz 3?
    Griffin-Franklin for a title shot?

    • bigj93 says:

i think griffin-franklin makes the most sense, but maybe not for a title shot. if i were joe silva id go with griffin-franklin and rampage-lil nog, winners face each other for a shot at shogun-rashad winner. with all these sick matchups 205 is looking better then ever

Excellent match-up indeed. BUT isn’t it weird that they matched up a win vs a lost. I dont think I seen that before. Usually its win vs win,
lost vs lost, 2 wins in a row vs 2 wins in a row, 2 loses vs 2 loses etc. So If the system is being tweekd I like it. It means more quality match-ups, regardless of your last fight. Lets see how long this lasts!

  • mmaman says:

Wow really looking forward to this one… Lil Nog’s hands dont really impress me that much, didnt look too sharp against Brilz. Im expecting Rampage to step his game up and get a knockout here

    • vincent661 says:

He wasn’t using his hands as much against brilz cuz he was scared of the takedown.
And since rampage has no takedowns, we should see a quick knockout…..and I hope to see rampage get rocked and/or submitted

      • Avatar of jcohl jcohl says:

I wouldn’t say that Rampage Jackson has “no takedowns”, but rather in the UFC has chosen to rely more on his stand-up game and takedown defense.
In PRIDE, he routinely ragdolled opponents using a limited but VERY effective folk/freestyle skillset, going as far as actually pro-wrestling style “powerbombing” opponents.
If Jackson decides to actually “re-discover” his wrestling roots, maybe thru a change in camps and/or trainers, he could be a serious problem for LittleNog, who as many observers pointed out seemed almost frantic to avoid being grounded by Jason Brilz…

      • Avatar of Chris Leslie Chris Leslie says:

one thing that needs to be pointed out is that his powerbombs and slams are now pretty much rendered illegal under the unified rules…

      • Avatar of jcohl jcohl says:

        Apologies for not being clearer.
I wasn’t suggesting that Jackson start planting guys on the mat, but rather merely that his ground game was once considered his strong suit…

      • Avatar of Chris Leslie Chris Leslie says:

all good, I just hear from people that Jackson should start slamming people again…

  • bigj93 says:

should be a stand up war, dont think lil nog’s wrestling is good enough to get rampage down and i know for a fact rampage wont look to take this fight to the ground because if it goes there i think lil nog gets the submission. although lil nog has very technically sound boxing so does rampage. rampages power and chin should be the difference and i expect him to get the KO/TKO 2nd or 3rd round.

  • CB says:

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will win this fight easily

  • skdrcr says:

This is a great fight for both fighters. I agree franklin/griffin should match up and then the winner of both would be interesting. Brilz looked good against lil nog. He should fight phil davis.

  • jaytrain says:

i like these 205 match ups but i dont think the winner should neccessarily get the title shot. 205 has alot of guys so nogueira/rampage and franklin/griffin. THere are Ryan Bader, Thiago Silva, and Randy Couture in the mix. Along with i believe Machida is ahead of all of them for a title shot

  • Agod54 says:

    Cant wait for this fight!!!!

  • Avatar of Darsh Darsh says:

Great matchup, should be an exciting fight, Rampage with th KO/TKO

  • onlytrue1 says:

Great match up should be a good one!!! Rampage if he can keep it on the feet wins by ko but if Lil Nog gets the fight on the ground he gets the Sub!! Lets GOOOOO RAMPAGE!!!!!!1

  • leo67 says:

I think if lil nog stands with rampage he will def get ktfo, nog has boxing and k.o power but not like rampage, obv on the ground is nogs best bet to win, winner shud face winner of griffn vs franklin i agree gud matchup,,,,and for bones after her destroys mashushenko, they shud give him machida,,,,,bones wants a big name machida needs to come bak witta big win soo y not upcomer bones, machida vs bones n e one? bader vs hammil?

  • sapperBOB says:

I’d really like to see lil nog take this fight just to see him in the title mix. How great would a rematch between lil nog and shogun be with the title on the line? As far a rampage goes, and i hate to say it, but i think this is a do or die match for him. If he wins he’ll be right up there in the title hunt. If he looses, then his chances at the gold are pretty much dead. I cant see him working his way back up there after 2 straight losses and with the LHW div being as stacked as it is. Again i hate to say it, but if he goes down in this fight i can see him being done with fighting.
