For those who don’t know this weekend is UFC 68 in Columbus, Ohio with a main event between heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia and UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture. Couture came back with a bang when he announced he would be returning to the Octagon not against a low ranked jobber, but instead against the champ.
The plot thickens as the spotlight shifted from the fight to their friendship. “The Maine-iac” and “The Natural” are close friends, or were, before Couture started accusing Sylvia of fighting to keep the belt but not fighting to the best of his ability. The comments have apparently driven a spike in their relationship and are causing the Sylvia mental problems before perhaps the most hyped match of their respective careers.
Brawl Sports has a quote from “The Natural” on the situation:
“We developed a strong friendship and as most fighters do, we have camaraderie amongst each other. That is probably causing more problems for Tim than it is for me. I’m used to fighting and competing against my friends. Tim doesn’t have that wrestling background where that happens on a regular basis; so I’m sure that friendship is messing with his head a little bit right now.”
Looking ahead, win or lose Couture has 3 more fights left on his 4 fights contract with the UFC. Most feel that should he lose he may drop down to light heavyweight where he could better contend in the currently thin division. Despite the big fight still looming this weekend, many are still wanting to know what is next for one of the biggest fan favorites in UFC history.
