UFC 79: Dan Henderson Added To Card, May Fight at Middleweight

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Oct 30, 2007 at 5:00 am ET16 Comments

Dan Henderson is expected to be back in the octagon in December at UFC 79 for his first fight since a UFC 75 loss to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson according to a report from Bubba The Love Sponge:

It appears that Dan Henderson may very well be fighting on the UFC 79 Nemesis December 29th card. While on a trip to Vegas this weekend, Bubba the Love Sponge mentioned on his Satellite Radio program today that he ran into Henderson. He stated that Dan mentioned in conversation that he thought he would be fighting in December. Bubba went on to say that Dan would not say who he would be fighting, but did mention that he may be fighting at 185 lbs.

Henderson is among a select group of potential challengers for Anderson Silva’s middleweight title. After fighting primarily in PRIDE for most of his career, Henderson, then the middleweight and welterweight champion of the promotion, returned to the UFC in September losing by unanimous decision to Jackson. Despite the loss Henderson has stated that he wishes to remain at light heavyweight though the UFC has been vocal in their wishes for him to move to 185-pounds for a possible showdown with Anderson Silva.

Wow, what a new years card.

  • micjasbro says:

There’s no way he’ll be fighting Anderson Silva for the unification.

#1 — he’s smart enough to know that Silva is unbeatable.
#2 — Silva just fought, they will give him more time off than just 2 months.
#3 — There are already two title fights on that card.

I would love nothing more to be proven wrong about this.

  • Red says:

I think a guy like Henderson would give Anderson a lot of problems. Henderson has great wrestling and we haven’t seen Silva fight a wrestler in the UFC, so it remains to be seen how he might handle a fighter who has strong wrestling. I think guys like Okamia nd Henderson have a very good chance of beating Silva. I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt that Henderson will on the UFC 79 card. The card already has Hughes vs. Serra and Liddell vs. Silva; the UFC will not improve this card any further, but as I said; I hope I am wrong.

Henderson needs to drop down and take on Silva. It is a chance to skyrocket his career. Who ever beats Silva gets an intstant pay raise, and becomes a superstar. He will take the fight. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in December. Andersen is still fresh.

  • jorgi to says:

Henderson has the chin to stand with Silva, so he can work for the take down. I think Henderson can beat Anderson (no one is unbeatable). Though I think he wont fight a big name opponent for his next fight, so he can get used to the cut again, Than he will fight Anderson.

  • micjasbro says:

“Henderson has the chin to stand with Silva,…”

That’s what they said about Leben.

  • scotchydow says:

There is no way in hell or the octagon that Chris Leben could go toe-to-toe with Wanderlei Silva for 3 or 4 rounds and KO him. That is what Hendo did, and I think he could scrap with Anderson as well. What about Wanderlei dropping to 185?

  • holy_dave says:

    micjasbro,
Any comparision with Dan Henderson and Chris Has-been is pathetic. DOn’t call yourself a fan if you really think Leben and Henderson are comparable in any way. Leben lost a reality show and barely beat up Patrick Cote and Terry Martin. Dan Henderson is the real deal.

  • micjasbro says:

I was making a reference to how they both are known for their ability to take a punch (only that!). Henderson is a much better fighter and is on another level when compared on their overall abilities. Leben is pretty much limited to striking, whereas Henderson has a whole arsenal of offensive tactics he can utilize.

But, when it comes to Anderson Silva’s striking, it doesn’t matter how well you can take a punch, because everyone has a limit. Henderson may be able to withstand the onslought from other fighters, but no other fighter has the precision and devestation that Anderson Silva delivers.

Yes, Henderson would whoop Leben’s ass, and make a much better showing against Silva than Leben did, but the outcome would be the same as when Leben fought him.

  • Dan McWilliams says:

Wow!! after the departure of couture (poster boy of UFC) are the cards going to be amazing the next while to maintain number 1? do you guys think thts what this maybe about?

  • holy_dave says:

I tend to think that Dan would be able to beat Anderson S. Yes, I know everyone thinks he’s unbeatable, but I think that Dan would bang with him, keep out of submissions, and out-wrestle his way to a victory. Call me crazy.

  • zero says:

henderson is not bad… but evan tanner is better

  • Marauder says:

Of course Dan isn’t fighting Anderson dude! Anderson just fought! Also, he’s not unbeatable. Look at this record. Dan Henderson has all the tools to beat Silva. A second unification bout would be huge as well!

If Dan Henderson does drop down, I’d like to see him fight somebody like Lutter, Marquardt, McFedries, McDonald or even Almeida. Damn that’s a lot of M’s.

Evan Tanner was good, but not THAT good. Silva>Franklin>Tanner

  • Sean says:

No one is unbeatable. but with all the talk of boring fights I believe that’s what it would take to beat anderson.. He has been fighting a while and still appears to get better every fight. If people keep approaching him with the whole “make an exciting fight” theory then he will continue to dominate. I think the person that beats him will be the one that can get it to the ground and keep it slow and uneventful.. LOL

  • holy_dave says:

Like Travis Lutter after cutting 27 pounds. If he hadn’t gassed, he stood a good chance. For real.

  • Parlous808 says:

Dan henderson is a beast, enough said. But anderson silva is an equally dangerous beast, how ever, Travis lutter (if he was in shape and lasted longer) looked as if he knew, or saw some sort of flaw in silva game, a hole, but silva took advantage of lutters flaws more quicker than lutter, I feel Hendersons flaws will work against Silva, I dont see the fight ending in KO or even early, I see it going the distance and ending in a split decsision. My oppinion
