Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier always had a respectful and even friendly relationship over the years, but according to the latter, that’s all over.
Although Cormier and Johnson fought in 2015 and this past April, the two never formed any type of beef. Sure, leading up to both of their fights they exchanged verbal warnings, outlined perceived weaknesses in each other’s game, but the two always had a solid relationship.
Well, on a recent episode of Cormier’s podcast, Talk & Talker, he weighed in on the news that Johnson’s apparently considering a comeback. Following “Rumble’s” second submission loss to Cormier this past April, Johnson announced he was hanging up the gloves to pursue opportunities outside of fighting.
While discussing this development, Cormier went on to share something that happened before he fought Jon Jones at UFC 214, which “DC” says has ended his relationship with Johnson. According to Cormier, Johnson attended the event, and after he greeted the decorated wrestler, the champ believes “Rumble” proceeded to give Jones advice on the upcoming bout (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“[Later], I guess Jon’s putting on his shoes or something, and then Rumble walks up to him again but now they’re hugging. Legitimately hugging! Rumble’s leaning over while Jon’s tying his shoes, and Rumble’s leaning over and giving him advice.
“What the f**k kind of advice are you giving him? F**king what the f**k? Why are you so friendly? This is a guy that at some point you may have to fight. You’re his friend now? Why the f**k are you his friend? Are you just hoping that he wins because I beat you? What the f**k are you doing?”
“I’m done dude. Rumble and I have no more relationship. What the f**k are you so friendly with a guy in your weight class for? F**k that. The competitor in you shouldn’t allow you to be that nice to that guy. In my mind, that dude is f**king soft…”
Wow. Now is there a chance that Cormier’s off base here? And that he didn’t see what he thought he saw? Possibly. Some might also argue that Johnson has every right to give Jones tips on how to face “DC”, but if that went down, it’s not surprising to hear that Cormier’s upset.
It will be interesting to see if Johnson responds to these comments, or what his take on the situation is.
