Pat Barry Suffers Broken Hand and Foot in UFC 115 Loss to Mirko Cro Cop
UFC heavyweight Pat Barry suffered a broken hand and foot in his third-round submission loss to Mirko Cro Cop in the UFC 115 co-main event on Saturday.
Barry twice dropped Cro Cop with punches in the opening round, only to have the veteran fight back strong in the second and doing to same in the third, before finally dropping Barry with punches and finishing him with a rear naked choke with 24-seconds remaining.
Barry wrote on Twitter that he broke his right hand on his third punch of the opening round, while ‘something’ broke in his foot in the first or second.
Barry wasn’t the only UFC 115 fighter to suffer a major injury, as headliner Rich Franklin broke his arm blocking a Chuck Liddell kick, but fought on to score a first-round knockout.

He did look alot more tentative after that first round.
To all the Cro Cop haters, this picture’s for you!! I like Barry; he’s a nice guy, but Cro Cop found his backbone last night. War Cro Cop!!
cro cop didn’t do this, he broke his own hand by punching cro cop. I’m not a cro cop hater, i like him a lot, but it may have been a different fight had he not broken his hand, one more right hand like the one that dazed mirko and he woulda been done.
But thats the thing he did break his hand and mirko prevailed
At least he injured himself in Canada. FREE HEALTH CARE!!!!
Not free per se, taxpayer-supported. But the point is well-taken: the Canadians have their act together.
No way, the Canadian Health care system is bogus. Yeah its “free” (socialized [which ends up making it more expensive to everybody]), so everyone goes in for every runny nose etc… and the lines end up being super long. People end up payng to go to the US for better service.
Don’t be fooled by the socialist health care agenda. Article 1 Sect. 8 of the US Constitution lists the powers of government and health care is not included.
Any further, the 10th amendment states that anything not listed in Article 1 sect. 8 remains up to the people and the states.
Socialized healthcare will put the nail in the coffin of the US…
lol hey Mortis noctu, watch the doc. ‘Sicko’-by michael moore about the US healthcare system its actually insane how ****ty US healtcare is, 45,000 people die every year because they can’t afford healthcare…believe me bud, Countries with free healthcare are a huge step above the US
The United States has the most expensive health care system in the world, and the health care costs continue to increase. 2004 Government figures show that health care spending reached 1.9 trillion dollars or about 16 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).
Comparatively, Canada spent only about 10% of GDP on healthcare, and offers access to all citizens. Propaganda over facts is the last nail in American coffin.
Just a side note: American life expectancy: 78.4 years. Canadian: 81 years. (Source World Bank)
Dan, those numbers are from a study that began tracking people ~15 years ago. they asked them, “Do you have health insurance?” then followed those who at that time did not have insurance. When someone in the study group died, they said “Oh, they died because the didn’t have health insurance,” regardless of whether or not they had picked up insurance since the beginning of the study, and regardless of what actually caused their death (some were car crashes, some died in hospital while being treated, some were other causes).
Dale,
Canada also has long waiting periods for services that are done on demand in the US. When you have service on demand vs. service after a waiting period it’s easy for more money to be spent.
However, the Off Topic Forums are a much better place to continue this discussion, should you like to do so.
@ danthe12man
I’m not saying the US’s healthcare isn’t f*cked right now, but it used to be much better before the HMO’s and the bloated insurance companies and big pharma corruption.
Health care used to be high quality and cheap in the US. For example, Ron Paul used to be able to treat people for free that couldn’t afford it because the system was arranged differently.
Judging by the “bud” in your response to my comment you are most likely Canadian and probably weren’t working in the health care profession in the US during the 60′s until now, having experienced the transition first hand.
Haha
Lex, with all the time you spend over at the forum I thought for sure you would take the shot and post about how Barry got served…
;-)
Umm… no, he’s not getting free health care, he’s getting health care that the city of Vancouver made the UFC pay massive amounts of money for (rumored to be somewhere in the vicinity of $12 million in insurance costs for UFC 115).
Shouldn’t all you guys be taking this political stuff over to the forum, and under the NON MMA header?
;-)
Yes thanks for pointing that out, I will add that to my last post.
First i must say i’m a fan of both fighters. But i was really disappointed with Pats performance. I know he’s capable of so much more and just didn’t have the hunger. He had too much respect and lost sight of the win. He had several perfect opportunities to finnish the fight but wanted to let Mirko up and fight standing.
I hope he loses his cocky edge (again) and comes back with great vengeance and furious anger. Pat has so much potential but needs to be at the bottom to push himself.
Mirko showed he is tough as boots and brought some impressive moves to the table. I hope there is a re match one day.
I gotta say, after Barry refused to engage a fallen Cro Cop twice, I called for the Cro Cop win. I like both guys, I put my $$$ on Barry, but cheered for Mirko after the 1st.
It’s like this: I was playing my bud’s son at Undisputed 2010 and didn’t want to beat him too bad, so after every knock down I’d let him back up with the intention of leg-kicking him to victory, or letting him get a late KO. Sure enough, the kid knocked me the F out quick time, and he did this more than once. When Barry didn’t engage the second time, I said aloud that he will lose the same way I lost. I call this trend of letting guys up the “cocky gamer syndrome”.
You make a fine point, but considering that Barry has no ground game… and Mirco has quite an underrated one, I’d don’t think this was the case of “cocky gamer syndrome”.
This was a case of a Barry keeping the fight where he was having the most success (standing) and away from his weakness.
True Barry wouldn’t want to exactly make it a ground fight, but I would like to think that a guy with a couple victories in the UFC (though both via strikes) would have enough overall game to land a few well-placed punches to the face of a dazed/grounded opponent. I still think that Barry wanted to end the fight standing in impressive fashion and let the moment get the best of him when he had his opponent down.
I don’t think he did it out of cockyness honestly. He needs to find a good camp and work on his grappling skills. I still see potential in him to be a complete fighter. He’s a pretty humble guy from what I have seen of him. He’s gonna get better with time.
Whether Cro Cop was dazed or not, is it a smart plan for Barry to go to the ground? What if Cro Cop recovers quick and he gets stuck down there with him?
…And this is what happens sometimes when a fighter fights his idol…
Barry showed a lot of class and for that he won me and a lot like as fans… have a speedy recovery brother and go and we are with you.
I agree that while Barry lost the fight, he came out of it with more fans than when he went into it.
On the downside, I think his underwhelming performance p!ssed off Dana, so his next fight back he’d best throw someone a wicked beatdown…
New pic of Barry’s leg and hands…

ouch …….
Yeah I’d say that looks bad . Surprised he went as long as he did .
I’d like to see him match up against Kongo or Gonzaga again . Give him a chance to redeem himself and show that maybe it was just a bad 2 fight stretch . If he can get by one or both then stick him back in there with Dos Santos .
By “him” do you mean Pat Barry?
Against Gonzaga he’d be victimized if the fight ever hit the mat, and against Kongo he’d probably be outmuscled and out-sized.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Pat Barry, but he’s small for the UFC HW class and his wrestling and submissions are anemic.
Also, its not like moving forward Dana will be signing smaller fighters that can’t wrestle, so his outlook is…cloudy at best…
I was pointing in Cro Cop’s direction . I think a rematch vs either or both Kongo and Gonzaga would be a good 2 fight stretch for him …… then if can pull that off maybe a rematch with dos Santos for a title shot .
@ DrDoom – apologies, my bad. I should have read your post more carefully.
And yeah, if Dana is serious about re-signing and featuring Mirko CroCop in the UFC HW class, I think guys like Kongo and Gonzaga make a lot of sense, as does Antoni Hardonk if he fights in the UFC again.
ESPECIALLY if CC is really determined this time to make a go of his MMA career in the Octagon and stop fixating on PRIDE and 2006…
Looks like Crop Cop used his right leg in the fight if you know what i mean lol
No, we don’t know what you mean. Please explain.
I think he’s referring to the “Right leg hospital, left leg cemetery,” quote from Cro Cop.
BINGO Justin!
Mirko told me off the record, when he signed contract with UFC, that he just hopes to be still alive after working it out. His legs are in very bad conditions end he told me that he can’t use kicks with more than 50% power, and also his general condition is not well due to injuries and hard trainings. He was only looking for some money to make with his name. I don’t think he will sign again, but never say never. With right ammount of money, and option to choose his own oponents, everything is posible. I’m his friend from his special forces days, and you all who jumps on Mirko just because he win fight against man with broken leg and arm, you should know that Filipovi? was suffering much heavier injuries during that, and all his previous fights in UFC.
