Now that McGregor’s all-star boxing match with Floyd Mayweather is over, the consensus is that a rubber match with Nate Diaz could be next for the Irish star. Of course, there’s also a chance McGregor will fight the winner of the October 7th, Tony Ferguson – Kevin Lee bout, which is for an interim 155 title. Then, there’s also Khabib Nurmagomedov, who McGregor has expressed an interest in fighting.
Well, Gaethje recently attended a media luncheon, in advance of TUF 26, which he’s coaching opposite of Eddie Alvarez. During the luncheon, the former WSOF champ had this to say (quote via MMA Fighting):
“McGregor, when he comes back, he’s gonna pick whoever he wants,” Gaethje said. “As the competitor that I see him being, he’s gonna want the most dangerous guy. When I finish Eddie Alvarez quickly, that’s gonna be me.
“On paper and on TV, I’m the most dangerous, violent guy in this division. Most hittable guy. So that’s probably someone he’d want to fight. As long as I knock out Eddie Alvarez quickly, that’s my goal — to get that fight.”
Now, there’s no doubt that hardcore fans would love to see McGregor – Gaethje. Stylistically, it has entertaining violence written all over it. If you didn’t see Gaethje’s UFC debut, when he stopped Michael Johnson, your life is incomplete.
But, it’s hard to imagine either McGregor or the UFC signing off on handing Gaethje a title shot, even if he scores a highlight reel win over Alvarez. A third bout with Diaz would be much bigger, in terms of revenue, not to mention that by that time, there will be interim champ.
Speaking of that, however, Gaethje also said this about McGregor, and the likelihood that he’ll be interested in facing Ferguson or Lee.
“…Obviously the pay has to be big, he’s a businessman. Smart businessman. But I don’t think that Ferguson or Lee would do it for him.”
Gaethje’s bout with Alvarez has yet to receive an official date, but it will take place before the year is up.
