If you thought all the drama regarding Paulie Malignaggi and his departure from Conor McGregor’s camp would quiet down, guess again.
For several days, there was more talk about McGregor vs. Malignaggi, then McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather. The reason being that Malignaggi elected to leave McGregor’s camp, after a picture of him on the canvas was posted. In addition, the retired boxer cited other issues he has with McGregor, and proceeded to fire verbal shots at the UFC champ. Then, when all the talk about Malignaggi’s died down somewhat, Dana White posted footage of the decorated boxer and McGregor sparring.
Well, since then, Malignaggi has repeatedly argued that he wasn’t knocked down, and has called for McGregor’s camp to release all of the sparring footage. Then, on the latest “MMA Hour”, the New York fighter had this to say about McGregor’s open media workout (quote via MMA Fighting):
“It became like a running joke in boxing,” Malignaggi said. “They had to kind of cover it up in some way, shape or form. So nice job. Nice edit — it was a nice, Hollywood edit. I thought it was adorable, I thought it was cute. But at the end of the day, every day you start to see holes in this little story.”
“How are you gonna prepare to fight Floyd Mayweather without your sparring?” Malignaggi added. “He doesn’t want to look like the running joke of boxing, but he’s making himself the running joke of boxing without even trying. If he stopped trying so hard and being ‘The Little Engine That Could’ and just trained and did his thing, none of this soap opera would even be up. Have you heard anything from Floyd Mayweather’s camp?”
Now, Malignaggi also went on to say that he wants to fight McGregor, but that if the latter is badly outgunned by Mayweather, he doubts anyone will want to see that happen. Guess we’ll see right?
What is interesting here is Malignaggi’s repeated insistence that McGregor’s camp is misrepresenting how their sparring sessions went. Even though, the sparring was recorded. In other words, is Malignaggi’s take on how he did against McGregor off? Or, if not, does he think the Irish star’s team won’t release it at some juncture?
McGregor and Mayweather are set to box August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
