A lot of folks are praising the pugilistic skills of Conor McGregor, following the release of footage that documented him landing on Paulie Malignaggi. But, former boxing champ and highly regarded boxing trainer, Jeff Mayweather, isn’t one of them.
A few days ago, Dana White posted footage of McGregor and Malignaggi sparring, and one of the videos included the latter going to the canvas. That sparked widespread debate as to whether it was a knockdown, or whether it was a push, which is what Malignaggi has claimed all along. One of the clips also shows McGregor landing a hard left on Malingaggi, which snapped his head back.
The clips have prompted some people, particularly those from the MMA world, to rethink how McGregor’s August 26th bout with Floyd Mayweather will go. After all, the latter has been a heavy, heavy favorite to win the contest, and while the videos haven’t changed that, it seems like more people are buying into McGregor’s contention he’s going to win.
“That’s part of the politics of boxing, it’s also part of salesman and the build up of everything,” he told Fight Hub about the fans’ reaction to it. “Realistically, by showing that much of what Conor’s doing, they actually exposed what he’s capable of. It’s worse, because he’s fighting a Paulie that’s out of shape.”
“The most important thing was the part they thought they were showing, was the fact that he got knocked down. But even by adding that clip, it actually looked worse, because everything else that happened in between that looked like trash.”
Now sure, people will point out that Mayweather is Floyd’s uncle, so it’s not like he would heap praise on McGregor, after reviewing the vids. But, it is important to note that Malignaggi is not on the same level of Mayweather Jr., and further, he hasn’t been preparing for a comeback. Not to mention the fact the footage only documents a few moments.
Mayweather – McGregor will take place on August 26th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
