Conor McGregor has repeatedly said he will return to the Octagon after he throws hands with Floyd Mayweather, but the star also intends to compete in the boxing ring moving forward.
For weeks, there’s been speculation and debate regarding McGregor’s future in fighting, since he’s about to make a ridiculous amount of money. Some have wondered if he might just retire. Others have questioned if the UFC champ might stick with boxing, especially if he manages to upset Mayweather on August 26th.
Well, McGregor has said that he plans to return to the UFC, and has even talked about fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov in Russia. During his media workout this week, McGregor had this to say about his future in combat sports (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I love the sport of boxing,” McGregor said. “Boxing has been dear to my heart my whole, entire life. “I will contend in boxing bouts going forward, and I will contend in mixed martial arts bouts going forward. I will rule both with an iron fist, and that’s where my mindset is.”
“I will have fun,” McGregor added. “I like it over this side. It’s good. The buildup is good, the preparation is good, I love the sport of boxing, I love the sport of mixed martial arts. I just love fighting. So wherever there’s a fight, you’ll see me.”
Now, if Mayweather absolutely dominates McGregor, then perhaps this could change. It’s not clear if there would be a lot of demand to see McGregor box, if he’s badly outgunned by Mayweather. Even if the latter is one of the greatest boxers to date. Further, you would have to wonder if the UFC would be on board, in that’s what transpires.
But, even if McGregor pushes Mayweather, then there will likely be considerable demand to see the Irish fighter box again. A lot of folks have already opined that a bout with Paulie Malignaggi could go down in the future.
Of course, if McGregor KOs Mayweather, then, things could get really, really interesting, in terms of his opportunities moving forward.
