The matchup, which was first reported in April, was one of eight fights made official on Thursday for the pay-per-view event, which takes place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
“When we offered Chael Sonnen this shot at the title, he promised us one thing: that he was going to make this a fight,” UFC President Dana White said in the announcement. “I know he means it, and after beating three legit contenders in Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami, and Dan Miller, he’s definitely going to bring the best out of Anderson Silva on August 7th. And as far as Anderson is concerned, he wants to remind everybody why he’s considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.”
Joining Silva vs. Sonnen on the UFC 117 main card is a welterweight bout between former champ and recent UFC Hall of Fame inductee Matt Hughes and Ricardo Almeida, as well as a lightweight contest between Clay Guida and Rafael dos Anjos.
The UFC 117 preliminary card is set to include Thiago Silva vs. Tim Boetsch, Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story, Dennis Hallman vs. Ben Saunders, and Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman, as well as a newly-announced bout between Rodney Wallace and UFC newcomer and Sengoku veteran Stanislav Nedkov.
