After Jon Jones took out Daniel Cormier UFC 214 last night, the 205 champ called out Brock Lesnar once again, and it didn’t take long to get a response from the WWE star.
Jones raised eyebrows last week by relaying that he’d like to fight the former heavyweight champ, and things ratcheted up a notch, when Lesnar responded with ” anytime, anywhere”.
Well, following Jones’ third round, stoppage win last night, the renowned fighter ushered this challenge (quote via Associated Press):
“Brock Lesnar, if you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, meet me in the Octagon.”
The AP reached out to Lesnar for a response, and the powerful wrestler reportedly said this:
“Be careful what you wish for, young man.”
There you have it. So could this really happen? Well, if Lesnar did elect to return to the UFC, he still has several months left to serve on his USADA suspension. But, UFC boss man Dana White definitely hasn’t outright, shot down the proposed bout either.
After UFC 214, White had this to say about the all-star bout:
“It’s fun to talk about, but the reality of it happening anytime soon, it’s not a reality,”
Jones, also repeated that he wants this bout to happen, while talking to the press afterwards. The champ noted it wold be “great for the MMA world”, due to all the exposure it would bring to the sport.
Jones was also reportedly asked about fighting current heavyweight champ, Stipe Miocic. But Jones note that Miocic isn’t nearly as well known as Lesnar, and that the payday with a Lesnar fight would be much bigger. There’s no question about that.
So, when you consider how much money WME – IMG spent on acquiring the UFC, don’t be surprised if the promotion takes a long, hard look at this. After all, who would have thought even a year ago that Conor McGregor would be boxing Floyd Mayweather?
