Paulie Malignaggi has been brought into help Conor McGregor prepare for next month’s boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, but it looks like the decorated boxer isn’t going to go out of his way to pump up the UFC champ.
Malignaggi recently joined McGregor’s camp, in advance of the latter’s highly anticipated, August 26th bout with Mayweather. The move raised eyebrows throughout combat sports, not only because Malignaggi was a very accomplished boxer, but because he and McGregor have traded some verbal shots in recent months.
Well, following his first sparring sessions with McGregor, Malignaggi reported that the Irish star has some “pop” in his left hand. But, more recently, the New York pugilist appeared on The Jime Rome Show, and Malignaggi reportedly said this about McGregor’s power (quote via Jime Rome.com):
“It’s definitely above average. I wouldn’t say it’s ‘Oh my God’ power,” Malignaggi said. “This is what I call ‘Oh my God’ power, even in sparring, and you’re like ‘Oh my God,’ like wow, this guy really hits hard.
“Now, ‘Oh my God’ power is very rare. There’s above average power, so if he lands a good shot on you, I mean granted, with small fight gloves he will hurt you, but it’s not ‘Oh my God’ power where every time he touches you you’re like my goodness, this is very uncomfortable. It’s not that kind of power, but it’s good enough.”
So, chances are a lot of folks will find these comments kind of interesting. Sure, Malignaggi’s relaying that McGregor is dangerous, on account of how hard he hits, but he clearly doesn’t feel the need to exaggerate the latter’s abilities. Even though he’s a member of McGregor’s camp.
Some folks might also see these comments as somewhat surprising, since Malignaggi originally said he doesn’t discuss how sparring sessions go. Could the argument be made that these comments are in violation of that? Hard to say.
Malignaggi also relayed again that he thinks McGregor could land some shots on account of his “awkwardness”, and that Mayweather should respect the star’s power.
