Three days out from UFC 214, no one under the combat sports sun thought we’d be talking about the possibility of Jon Jones fighting Brock Lesnar, but here we are…
As you surely know, Jones is booked to fight his longtime rival, light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, on Saturday night. But, earlier this week, Jones raised eyebrows throughout MMA, by saying he’d like to fight Brock Lesnar. Buzz about that ratcheted up a notch, after the former heavyweight champ said he’d fight Jones “anytime, anywhere”.
Well, at today’s pre-fight presser for UFC 214, Jones asked about Lesnar once again. The former light-heavyweight champ responded with this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I’ll deal with Daniel, and then I’ll deal with Brock Lesnar.”
All this talk about Lesnar – Jones has transpired, not long after it was reported that the WWE star has re-entered USADA’s testing program. The UFC Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky has said Lesnar hasn’t in fact done so, and in addition, the executive has also said there’s been no talks with the former heavyweight champ’s team. But, sources from the wrestling world have reportedly said that Lesnar intends to re-enter the testing program, so that he has options when his WWE deal is up.
Well, White was asked about the Lesnar – Jones talk, and the UFC President said this:
“It’s crazy,” White said. “I don’t know where that thing came from or how it got started. Believe me, I haven’t talked to Brock Lesnar. I don’t know.”
“It sounds like nobody believes me, but it’s true.”
So, if Lesnar is thinking about coming back to the UFC, it certainly doesn’t sound like the star has reached out to the promotion about it. That doesn’t mean, however, that he’s not considering it. It also doesn’t mean that the UFC wouldn’t be interested in having the massive fighter back in the Octagon again, Especially if it was for a huge, huge fight with someone like Jones.
First things first, however, and that’s Cormier – Jones II.
