As Conor McGregor’s all-star bout with Floyd Mayweather nears, speculation regarding the UFC champ’s future in MMA continues. But, the Irish star says he’s looking forward to returning to the Octagon.
Mr. McGregor is going to make a ridiculous amount of money on August 26th, when he boxes Floyd Mayweather. As a result, some have wondered if McGregor might just decide to walk away from fighting after the bout. In addition, some have questioned if McGregor might attempt to switch to boxing, if he does get by Mayweather. After all, there’s a ton of money to be made at the top of that game.
But, while speaking with the press after Monday’s press conference, McGregor had this to say about his future in MMA (quote via MMA Weekly):
“Look, I love a true fight,” McGregor said. “Elbows, knees, shin bone, you ever bounce a shin bone off a nose bone? You ever dug an elbow into the temple? It’s an unusual feeling. It’s an unusual feeling when the elbow bone digs into the temple. It’s a nasty little one. It’s something I enjoy. It’s something I love to do.
“So I look forward to going back to MMA and have a true fight after this.”
As others have noted recently, it is pretty hard to imagine McGregor walking away from fighting at the age of 28. Yes, he’ll be filthy rich come August 27th, but McGregor has talked repeatedly about adding to his legacy. Dana White recently reported that McGregor has talked about wanting to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in his native Russia.
White has acknowledged that McGregor might decide to walk away after the bout, but he’s also relayed this not long ago:
“In the conversation that I had with him, he’s fired up for this fight and he’s excited to fight again and defend his [UFC] title by the end of the year. Nothing is a guarantee. You can’t be guaranteed anybody’s ever going to fight again.”
First things first, however, and that’s throwing hands with Mayweather, August 26th.
