Holly Holm is one of the more decorated boxers to ever cross over into MMA, and as a result, she’s a pretty good person to check in with, regarding Conor McGregor’s chances against Floyd Mayweather.
If you don’t know, before Holm turned her focus to MMA, she put together a pro-boxing record of 33-2-3. Not only that, but the Albuquerque star won multiple championships and defended titles in various weight classes. So, ya; she knows a few things about the sweet science.
Recently Holm appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and during the interview, she was asked to weigh-in on Mayweather – McGregor. Here is some of what the UFC’s former bantamweight champ had to say (quote via MMA Fighting):
“Mayweather is undefeated for a reason,” Holm said. “But still, if feel anything can happen in a fight and Conor’s got speed which, I think, Mayweather, a lot of people can’t handle Mayweather’s speed. I think Conor has speed and he can deal with speed pretty well. I think Conor’s fighting style and stance can actually be competitive for Mayweather.”
“If McGregor wins, its going to be earlier,” Holm added. “If it goes longer, it’s going to be Floyd Mayweather. Anything can happen in a fight. I don’t think it’s a disgrace. I think if anyone’s out there making fun of this fight, I can guarantee you that those are the people who don’t fight.”
This is interesting to hear. While some people have been saying McGregor could pose some issues for Mayweather, most of them are from the MMA world. But in this case, while Holm is currently only competing in MMA, she was a fixture in boxing for years.
It’s also interesting to read her reaction to critics of the bout, particularly since the most vocal ones have largely been from the boxing world.
Mayweather – McGregor will go down on August 26h in Las Vegas, Nevada. Holm, meanwhile, has yet to have her next bout booked, following her KO win over Bethe Correia last month.
