Kevin Lee will throw down with fellow lightweight contender Michael Chiesa later today, and according to “The Motown Phenom”, the latter’s “mentally broke”.
Lee will battle Chiesa in the main event of UFC Fight Night 112, which will take place in Oklahoma City. It’s a pivotal fight, as the winner will likely lock up a bout with a top five ranked 155’er. Before today’s card, Chiesa is ranked #6 and Lee is #11.
It’s also an interesting bout, since the lightweights made headlines and then some last month, when Lee took a shot at Chiesa during the UFC’s “Summer Kickoff” presser. So, is this fight personal for Lee? Considering what’s unfolded leading up to the fight?
Well, during the latest “UFC Tonight“, here’s what Lee had to say on that subject (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“I don’t make these fights personal. There’s not room for emotion in these fights. He’s already mentally broke. He knew that going into the press conference. This fight sells itself. You’ve got this country boy from the Redwoods driving the beat up pickup truck vs. a young, flashy dude driving a Benz in Las Vegas.”
“I told him, I’m going to whop him. He doesn’t stand a chance in this fight. Only if I make a mistake. I’m bigger, faster and stronger. I’m much more technical. That’s already playing in his head. He’s hoping I’m going to make a mistake. He’s already frustrated. I didn’t say anything bad about his mom. I don’t fight for free.”
There you have it. It’s going to be interesting to see how Lee approaches Chiesa. The surging lightweight has frequently turned to his wrestling and top game in his UFC run, but Chiesa is a noted finisher, when it comes to subs.
If Lee wins, he’ll move his winning streak to five. If Chiesa takes it, however, he will have won four in a row.
The main card for UFC FN 112 will be broadcast on FS 1 in the U.S. beginning at 9 PM/ET.
