Team Alpha Male has long been considered one of the best camps in all of MMA, and now the famous gym has landed a huge sponsorship, via an aviation company.
TAM founder, Urijah Faber, recently announced on “The MMA Hour” that Mountain Lion Aviation has sponsored the team. The deal was facilitated by the company’s chairman Jim Wilkinson. Here is some of what Faber had to say about the sponsorship agreement (quote via MMA Fighting):
“[Wilkinson] stepped up big-time with a substantial sponsorship for our team,” Faber said. “including salaries for our coaches, which, we’ve always been a self-funded team where the guys pitch in and pay cash to pay for the coaches. Now we’ll be able to staff, put guys on, make them more comfortable so they can be hands-on a lot more, spend more time with the fighters, be more involved and make the scene even better.
“We’ll have a scholarship program now,” Faber added. “We’ve got a little bit of a recruiting budget and we have guys that we’re trying to pull in and build the team throughout, from 105-pound girls to the heavyweight guys. We’ve been looking to grow the team and make the best team in the world through and through. He’s also incorporating a discretionary bonus system, which has kind of gone away with the new ownership with the UFC. You may end up with a check in your mailbox — that’s the way it used to be with the UFC.”
This sounds pretty sweet. Faber also reported that TAM fighters will receive free flights via Mountain Lion Aviation, which is also a nice perk. The new agreement comes following TAM’s move into a new 21,000 square foot facility, so, clearly it’s a good time to be part of the Sacramento team.
It will be interesting to see if other all-star gyms land similar deals in the coming months and years.
TAM has been the training base for numerous, high profile fighters to date, including TJ Dillashaw, Joseph Benavidez, Cody Garbrandt, Lance Palmer, Chad Mendes and of course Faber, among others.
