The narrative tied to the upcoming bout between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum is that it could serve as a title shot eliminator, but Derrick Lewis isn’t on board with that theory.
Overeem and Werdum will fight on July 8th, at UFC 213 in Las Vegas. Since Werdum is ranked #1, and Overeem is #3, obviously the winner will be sitting in a pretty key spot, in terms of the title shot mix.
Meanwhile, Lewis is set to fight Mark Hunt this Saturday at UFC Fight Night 110. Since Lewis has won six in a row, and is ranked #6, a win over Hunt will have him knocking on the title shot door. As a result, recently Lewis was asked to weigh-in on Werdum vs. Overeem, in terms of what’s on the line in that bout. The heavy-handed heavyweight said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“Those guys, they’re punch drunk.” Lewis said. “You blow on their chin, they drop. They don’t got a chin like they used to anymore, especially Overeem. Since he’s been off the juice, he hasn’t been having nothing, so, we’ll see.”
Lewis isn’t the only person to make comments like this about Overeem recently. Case in point, Werdum has outright said that he plans to target the decorated heavyweight’s chin.
Chin talk aside, since both Overeem and Werdum aren’t far removed from KO losses to Miocic, it’s kind of hard to imagine the UFC granting the winner of the July 8th bout a title shot at this point. If Lewis can score a big win on Saturday, then he very well could be next for Miocic. Francis Ngannou is also in the mix.
UFC FN 110 will go down in Auckland, New Zealand.
