Following Demetrious Johnson’s claims that the UFC and Dana White have been bullying him, as a means to secure a fight between him and TJ Dillashaw, Daniel Cormier is calling on the promotion to pay up….
Since Dillashaw offered to fight Johnson next, “Mighty Mouse” has argued that the former bantamweight champ needs to score a win at 125, before he challenges for the title. In addition, Johnson recently claimed White threatened to punt the flyweight division, if the champ didn’t agree to fight Dillashaw. Johnson has also said he’d fight Dillashaw, provided the UFC is willing to compensate him, if the latter doesn’t make weight.
Well, during the latest “UFC Tonight”, Cormier had this to say about the well publicized situation (quote via MMA Fighting):
“UFC, if you want Demetrious Johnson to fight T.J. Dillashaw, give him the money,” Cormier said Wednesday. “Pay him a million dollars and say ‘that’s your fight.’ I know it’s a lot for a 125-pounder, but the guy’s the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Pay him the money, and then let him go fight. … Pay him as the No. 1 fighter in the world for once.”
“I think the responsibility for everything can be shared between Demetrious and the UFC,” Cormier added. “The UFC really doesn’t understand how to market him, because they have to get creative. He’s smaller. He’s not the biggest guy. He’s dominant. Even when Anderson Silva was the guy running through his division, his points weren’t very high, so they have to get creative…”
Now, chances are the UFC won’t offer Johnson a million dollars for the bout, not guaranteed at least. But, one would think that offering Johnson more money up front would help make this fight a reality, if the promotion truly wants it to take place. After all, as Cormier noted, we’re talking about one of the greatest fighters the game has seen, and who’s gunning to set a new title defense record.
