Following Alexander Gustafsson’s one sided, and impressive win today over Glover Teixeira, the light-heavyweight contender outlined why he’ll be cheering for Daniel Cormier on July 29th.
On that date, Cormier will take on his longtime rival, Jon Jones, at UFC 214. The bout will mark the second time they’ve fought, as back in 2015, Jones defeated “DC” by decision.
Well, not only could Gustafsson face the winner of that fight soon, he’s also battled both Cormier and Jones before (and lost close decisions each time). After UFC FN 109 today, Gustafsson had this to say, while discussing who he’ll be rooting for at UFC 214 (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I don’t like him,” Gustafsson said, while referring to Jones. “I give him that he’s the best fighter of all-time, the best pound-for-pound fighter of all divisions — of course, everybody knows that. He hasn’t even lost a fight yet, he demolishes everyone he fights. But as a person, he’s not a champion in my eyes. He’s not a good person in my eyes.
“That’s why I always tell the guys, ‘I hope that DC [Daniel Cormier] wins (at UFC 214) because I like the guy, he’s a worthy champion. So that’s what I mean when I say that he’s the biggest enemy of all-time.”
Wow. Now, there’s certainly other people, like “DC”, who aren’t fans of the former light-heavyweight champ. But, Gustafsson isn’t really known for criticizing fighters while taking to the press.
If Jones defeats Cormier later this summer, then chances are his first title defense will come against Gustafsson later this year. The UFC has tried rebooking Jones – Gustafsson before, but the fight always fell through. If the rematch is booked, then based off what Gustafsson said today, the lead-up to the fight will be extremely interesting.
