JDS landed a couple of hard leg kicks early on into the bout, which clearly hurt Miocic. But, the latter kept pursuing dos Santos and proceeded to floor him with a booming right. The victory was Miocic’s fifth straight, stoppage win, and avenged his 2014 loss to the former champ.
Well, since the bout, there’s been a lot of debate as to who might be next for Miocic. Since Ngannou has won five in a row now since he joined the UFC, there’s been speculation the rising heavyweight might be tapped for a title shot.
Ngannou was a guest on a recent episode of “The MMA Hour”, and when asked for his thoughts on Miocic’s latest win, he said this (quote via Bloody Elbow):
“That was a good performance, but I was not impressed, I need more than that. I would say I’m more impressed with someone like [Cain] Velasquez. I think Velasquez is the best heavyweight that we have, and that’s why I want to fight him.”
“The reasons why I moved to Las Vegas is because right now I’m ready for all challengers. I’m ranked No. 5 right now and I could probably fight anyone right now, Ngannou added later. “I already called out Velasquez but he says he’s injured, but I would like to fight him and then get a title shot.”
How about that? Ngannou isn’t the only person who believes that Velasquez is the best heavyweight on the planet, but the former champ continues to battle injuries, and many wonder if he’ll ever be at his best again.
It will be interesting to see what comes next for Ngannou. Either he, or Derrick Lewis, if the latter gets by Mark Hunt, could be next for Miocic.
