Following the news that Conor McGregor has come to terms with the UFC, for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., the latter’s reporting he believes the bout will go down.
After it was announced that McGregor and the UFC have agreed to a deal for the boxing match, Dana White relayed he was going to meet with Mayweather’s camp next. Well, one of the boxers Mayweather promotes, Gervonta Davis, recorded a victory this past weekend in England. After the bout, Mayweather Jr. was of course asked for an update on the McGregor fight, and the undefeated fighter said this (quote via Bloody Elbow):
“If me and Conor McGregor do happen to make the fight happen, which I think the fight will happen, I would love for [Gervonta Davis] to be on the undercard,” Mayweather said. “I also would like [former WBC super middleweight champ] Badou Jack to be on the undercard, but tonight’s Tank night. Let’s talk about him. He’s done a great job, he’s done a tremendous job. I had a great career, and my career may not be over. Number 50 may be against Conor McGregor, we’ll just wait and see. But tonight is Tank night, he went out there and he looked brilliant, and I give him an A+.”
Now, obviously, this doesn’t mean that McGregor – Mayweather will take place. As talks with the UFC could go south and a deal might not ever get done. But, increasingly the signs are pointing to McGregor – Mayweather happening.
When the year began, who could have predicted the biggest fight tied to the UFC for 2017 would be a boxing match…
