John Makdessi Wants to Fight Artem Lobov: “I Have no Idea How he Got to The Main Event”

Prior to UFC Fight Night 108, some folks criticized the promotion’s decision to give Artem Lobov a main event slot, and John Makdessi is still wondering how that happened.

Lobov was booked to fight Cub Swanson in the card’s headliner last month, and the latter went on to win the fight via unanimous decision. Since Lobov isn’t a top 15 ranked 145’er, and Swanson has long been regarded one of the best featherweights in the game, the match-up surprised many. Then again, because Lobov is one of Conor McGregor’s longtime friends and training partners, others weren’t too shocked…

Well, recently Makdessi spoke with MMA Junkie.com Radio, and while discussing his next bout, the lightweight said this (quote via MMA Junkie):

“I’m not in the position to pick and choose my opponents, but Artem Lobov is a good matchup for me,” Makdessi said. “… I’d love to fight McGregor (teammates) because they’re all fighting on the hype. If you look at Artem Lobov, he got a main-event (fight). I have no idea how he got to the main event, to be honest with you. Look at his record: Who did he fight? I’ve fought top guys.”

On paper, Makdessi – Lobov has the makings of a very, interesting and entertaining scrap. Makdessi is a very talented striker, and Lobov is ridiculously tough and can also crack. But, the latter fights at 145, and while Makdessi is small for the lightweight division, it would be somewhat surprising if this match-up got made.

Makdessi is looking to get back on track following a spinning wheel kick, KO loss to Lando Vannata in December.
