Though newly-crowned UFC light heavyweight champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had hoped to face Randy Couture in his first title defense, UFC President Dana White told Carmichael Dave this week that the winner of the upcoming matchup between former champs Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans, which headlines UFC 114 on May 29, will get the next shot at the 205-pound belt.
Rua (19-4) has now won 3 of his last 4 fights after bouncing back from a controversial October unanimous decision loss to title-holder Lyoto Machida with a decisive first-round KO of Machida at Saturday’s UFC 113.
After losing the title to Forrest Griffin in mid-2008, Jackson (30-7) has earned back-to-back wins over Wanderlei Silva and Keith Jardine, while Evans (14-1-1) bounced back from the first loss of his career to Machida last May with a unanimous decision over Thiago Silva in January.
Rua’s first title defense is expected to take place this fall barring injuries.
