Marcus Davis vs. Nate Diaz Possible for UFC 118 on August 28 in Boston
After snapping a two-fight losing streak with a win at Saturday’s UFC 113, Marcus Davis has already been booked for his next bout, as “The Irish Hand Grenade” is expected to face fellow welterweight Nate Diaz at UFC 118 on August 28 in Boston, according to MMAjunkie.
Following back-to-back losses to Dan Hardy and Ben Saunders, Davis (17-6), who trains out of nearby Team Sityodtong, scored a second-round TKO of Jonathan Goulet on the UFC 113 preliminary card to improve to 9-4 in the UFC with wins in 3 of his last 5 fights.
After losing 3 of his past 4 fights to notable lightweights Clay Guida, Joe Stevenson, and Gray Maynard, Diaz (12-5) made his welterweight debut in March with a first-round TKO of Rory Markham at UFC 111. Diaz was among those involved in a post-fight brawl at last month’s “Strikeforce: Nashville” event, but it’s not yet known if he’ll be suspended for his actions.
UFC 118 is headlined by lightweight champ Frankie Edgar’s first title defense vs. former title-holder BJ Penn, and is also expected to feature a matchup between lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard as well as Randy Couture vs. James Toney.

3 cards in August right? sweet!
I really like this matchup.
Davis is a technical striker with some good power and he’s got a good ground game. I think he’s going to give diaz a fight and boy would i love to see nate lose.
I’d say the only, and biggest obstacle davis will have is penetrating through diaz’s long reach and sort of “peppering” (diablo).
He doesn’t have to worry about the height difference the way he did against saunders cuz nate isn’t going to leg kick him or clinch him up.
Looks like a bad a$$ card!
Yeah, 3 cards in August, two PPVs and one on Versus.
Yeah, I like Davis alot. I think He’s been underated for a long time and even though he’s coming off a couple losses, I think he should have been matched up with somebody like Hardy or Koscheck a long time ago. I’m hoping he can win over Diaz and maybe get himself back in the mix.
Davis did fight Hardy at UFC 99 last June and lost a split decision.
nice fight but cant see how davis wins this fight, should be fun to watch tho
I really hope Davis can pull off a win here. Regardless of how good Diaz is, I think he’s a punk and overall bad for the sport.
i have a feeling if diaz losses it may be his last ufc fight… gives dana a good enough excuse to get rid of a person who has the potential to cause the ufc problems
What has Nate ever done in the UFC to merit this?
If Diaz loses to Davis I believe that would be him dropping 4 of his last 5, and guys have been cut from the UFC for less…
He’s 2-1 in his last 3, so I don’t even know how that’s possible… That would make him 2-2 in last 4.
And in his last 7 fights he’s picked up 5 “…of the Night” honours.
Very good question diablo.
Member Nate won the UFC show…. And has the UFC cut any winner of the show yet? the worst they have done to a winner of the reality show is move him to WEC… or am I wrong?
jdubb,
They cut Travis Lutter.
eldiablo,
His 2-1 in his last 3 but 2-3 in his last 5, if he drops the fight to Davis he would be 2-4 in his last 6. I’m guessing Jchol just got a little off on the number of fights lost/won for Diaz, probably forgot about the Guillard fight.
@ justin & devilman – my bad, I did in fact forget the Guillard fight.
And I’m not necessarily saying that Diaz SHOULD be cut, even though I am no Diaz supporter, I was just making the point that Dana cuts who he feels like cutting, and doesn’t base it on a set of specific guidelines and/or criteria.
Apologies again for the math error…
Nice matchup. I see this fight ending the exact same way Diaz/Markham did.
I like Davis, but unfortunately think you may be right about your prediction.
my boy nate is ganna put hands on davis..stockton baby
I agree with you stk. This fight will be a good one but I think Diaz comes out on top. I don’ t think people give Nate enough credit as a fighter (all the personal stuff and the Strikeforce incident aside). Marcus’ ground game is nowhere near the level of Nate’s, but I don’t know if Nate should stand up with Davis either. Nate has won 2 of his last 5 fights including a submission of the night win over Melvin Guillard and a 1st rd TKO of Rory Markham. His last three losses were to Gray Maynard, Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida all by decision, in which he picked up fight of the night honors in both the latter. I think this fight could go either way: Standup fight= Marcus Davis K.O rd 2. Ground fight= Nate Diaz via submission rd 2. Also keep in mind that Nate has only been finished once in his career by Hermes Franca in the WEC via armbar in rd 2. This should be interesting as I expect to see Nate display his improving standup skills, but one mistake by Nate and I think Marcus wins by (T)K.O. It’s a hard one for me to call.
What a great card…maybe I’ll get tickets! Marcus Davis AND Ken-FLo in Beantown. Plus, a chance to see a Hall of Famer AND and future Hall of Famer. How do I convince my wife to take the Saturn Sky on a romantic trip up 95??
Although I want Davis to win, I think that Diaz is a better fighter. One thing to look out for is the trash talking aspect. You KNOW Diaz will talk trash and if Davis is smart, he will bring the trash talk right back to perhaps piss off Diaz to the point where he will want to stand and bang with Davis. If that happens, Davis can take advantage of his striking skills to pull off a KO because if this fight goes to the ground, Diaz will most likely cruise to victory.
i do not like marcus davis he is overrated and nate diaz will prove that come fight night. i dont really like nate either but its kinda ineresting to see what he has to say bc he honestly thinks he can beat anybody haha it will just add to his cockyness when he beats davis
Over rated? Haha. You must not follow his fights much. He puts on a good show every time and has a very decent record, and gets little to no credit.
Well, Nate will have a home in Strikeforce if he loses. But since he’s a 155er, he won’t challenge his homie g-dog Melendez to a title fight.
If either of them were to get cut, I think davis would be more
likely to if he was the loser, which is what I think will happen.
It’s kind of interesting because after the Markham fight I remember
Nate saying he was dropping back down to 155.
I’m a huge Marcus Fan. He has ungodly power in a small space. And his ground game is very under rated. I train at Davis’s gym here in Maine and I have no doubt he has learned from his loss with Ben. I say TKO by Davis three or so minutes in the first round.
Well, Davis is one of those “fight of the night” guys that I think the UFC likes to keep around. Guys like him, Chris Lytle, Jeremy Stevens, Paul Taylor, etc. It seems to me those guys would always have a home in the UFC win or lose as long as they provide interetsing match-ups for opponents and make exciting fights.
