If you’ve had a recent discussion about who’s in the title shot mix at 155 recently, the name Dustin Poirier may not have been mentioned, but “The Diamond” plans to change all that this weekend.
Poirier is booked to face former champ Eddie Alvarez at UFC 211, which will go down on Saturday in Dallas, Texas. The fight will mark the first time Alvarez has fought, since he was stopped by Conor McGregor last November and lost the lightweight crown.
Poirier, meanwhile, is coming off a decision win over Jim Miller, which returned him to the win column, after he was knocked out by Michael Johnson in September. Recently Poirier was asked about what’s on the line in his bout with Alvarez, and the ATT fighter said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I know I’m right there in the mix,” Poirier said. “This performance on Saturday will put me even closer (to the belt). I feel I’m one away with a win over Eddie. If not, right there along the guys who are trying to get that interim fight, or get that title fight. We’ll see what happens with Conor (boxing Floyd Mayweather).”
It’s a fair point. Poirier is currently ranked #9 and Alvarez is #3. So, if he can defeat the latter, a title shot eliminator could very well come next. And in terms of how Poirier sees his bout with Alvarez going down? The 28 year-old predicted “I think I’m going to touch him up and get him out of there…”
Well see what happens. Alvarez – Poirier is definitely one of the must see fights scheduled for UFC 211, which probably has the best line-up thus far, in terms of UFC cards that have taken place this year.
