A lot more fighters are speaking out these days about how much they’re earning, and the UFC’s matchmaking policies, and Luke Rockhold continues to be one of the most vocal.
In recent months, the former middleweight champ ‘s made it clear he’s not happy with his contract. More recently, Rockhold’s been blasting the UFC’s decision to have Georges St-Pierre fight Michael Bisping next. After all, GSP has never competed at 185 in the Octagon, and the middleweight division has contenders like Yoel Romero waiting to get their hands on the champ.
Rockhold was a guest on the latest “MMA Hour” this week, and once again, the well rounded fighter took aim at the Bisping – GSP fight. Here is some of what Rockhold had to say (quote via MMA Fighting):
“If they’re not putting an interim title on the line, or if they’re not making Bisping fight a contender, I’m not fighting anybody. And so should the rest of the division, too. What’s the point? Without me, Mousasi, Yoel, and Whittaker? I think everyone should just stand their ground, and say f*ck you. Put a title on the line or else, f*ck, you don’t even have a division.”“I think everyone is already on strike, aren’t they?” added the former champ. “We’re all waiting on a title. Whittaker’s down. I’ve voiced my opinion, and I think Mousasi should stand his ground too. I mean, without us you have no f*cking division. Make something happen.”
There’s no doubt that waiting to see if GSP can win the 185 title, in his first bout since 2013, is a fascinating story line. But you can certainly understand why purists, and contenders like Rockhold continue to fire away at the fight.
The fact that GSP has said he won’t be ready to fight Bisping until after October, is likely only going to fuel opposition to the bout. By the time the fight goes down, it will probably be over a year since Bisping defended the belt against Dan Henderson, who at the time, wasn’t ranked in the top ten.
