Jay Silva Replaces Paulo Filho, Meets Hector Lombard at Thursday’s Bellator 18
Two-time UFC fighter Jay Silva will replace former WEC middleweight champ Paulo Filho in a non-title ‘super fight’ with Bellator middleweight champ Hector Lombard scheduled for Thursday’s Bellator 18 event in Monroe, Louisiana, the promotion today confirmed.
Filho announced on Friday that visa issues would prevent him from facing Lombard at the Fox Sports Net-televised event, which also features the semifinals of Bellator’s featherweight tournament, but Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told MMAjunkie that the matchup was still on.
Despite struggling with depression and substance abuse after winning the WEC title in 2007, Filho has rebounded from a November 2008 loss to Chael Sonnen with three-straight wins over Melvin Manhoef, Alex Schoenauer, and most-recently Tatsuhiko Nishizaka in December.
Silva (5-3) hasn’t fought since dropping back-to-back UFC bouts to CB Dollaway in September and Chris Leben in January, while Lombard (25-2-1) is unbeaten in 18-straight fights, including three-straight victories since claiming the Bellator title last summer.

Does it surprise anyone that Filho has pulled out again?
At least this time it’s for “visa issues”.
Yeah he also missed Dream for “visa issues”. One would think he would have had those settled by now.
Visa issues…mental health issues…substance abuse issues…Paulo Filho is damaged goods in terms of MMA, and Bellator is most likely better off without him, but I do hope that as a person he can get his life back into some semblance of order…
At some point, you just have to give up hope and move on. If he ever gets his house in order, great, but don’t stick your finger in your eye waiting for that day to happen.
i remember someone calling paulo filho pulling out the day the fight was announced, this is a joke though paulo filho you bottler
on a seperate note i think jay silva has some really good striking and power and could possibly pose a threat
Agreed.
IMO Silva is probably better than his UFC run would lead MMA fans to believe, and physically will be a more competative match-up for Lombard than Filho would have been…
